What is an effective cleaning solution / neutralizer for cat urine in carpet or fabric? (Yuck!!)?

Answers:
It's the smell of decaying fatty deposits in cat urine that makes it smell so bad.

You can purchase enzymatic cleaning products from the vets or pet supply shops. A home remedy that your can try is to mix 10% biological (enzymatic) washing powder with 90% warm water to clean the area. Use a nail brush to ensure you get right into the fibres of the fabric. Then rinse thoroughly with cold water and wipe dry. Next, using a plant mister lightly spray the area with a low grade alcohol or surgical spirit. Allow the area to dry thoroughly or you can use a hair-drier to speed things up. I'd recommend testing this on a small area first to ensure it doesn't remove the colour from the carpet or fabric of the affected area. Dependent upon how strong the smell is, you may need to repeat this cleaning method.

Cat urine contains ammonia, so whatever you do, don't use bleach or any products containing ammonia to clean the area.
Nature's Miracle...

(i am currently studying vet. med, and that is one that my professors swear by!)
vinegar and water in a spray bottle. after you clean it with a regular cleaner like simple solution. it really helps with the smell.
Natures Miracle
available at most pet stores
Look for a product called Urine-Off you can get from vets or on-line. It is the only thing I've ever found that actually works. I know some people swear by Nature's Miracle but it's never quite cut it for me. Urine-off is a little more expensive but it really gets the smell 100% gone.
I think there is a product called Urine B Gone that is made just for that, I believe you can get it a drugstores and supermarkets.
