What color cat has the best temperament? i want a male .asking anyone w/lots of experience(breeders, groomers)

i heard that color affects temperament in cats. i would like to get a male kitten who will have a better chance of growing up to be affectionate, laid back and sweet . i will get an american shorthair at the pound..no purebreds for me. i would appreciate answers from those who have had lots of exposure to cats(breeders, groomers vets, ). one or two cat experiences per person will be less objective. i already have a color in mind because there seems to be agreement out there that this color cat is the friendliest. wondering if i will get the same response here.
Answers:
Well, I'm partial to male orange tabbies. They tend to be big sweet doofuses.

The office cat at the vet hospital where I work is a long-haired orange tabby who came to us off the streets five years ago. Roger has a basket on the receptionist's desk, and greets everyone who comes in. Somehow he knows which dogs to approach and which to stay away from, and he is amiable to all the cats that come in. I've seen him go up to the cages of frightened cats and make chuckling and chirping sounds that seem to help calm them, and when someone has to have a pet euthanized he will go and get up in the grieving owner's lap or sit with them.

So my vote is for orange tabby boys.
long haired cats are generally more laid back than short haired theres plenty of long haired ones at the pound tho! white cats sometimes are born deaf so if you chose this color make sure you know it isnt or if it is your willing to take on this kind of thing. calico cats are always girls so that ones out if you want a male. black cats seem to be more subdued than other colors maybe that just the ones ive seen though. i have a persian rag doll mix that i got from a free kitten box outside of a pet store when i had just planned of getting food lol! and shes been the sweetest most docile cat ive ever owned.
I have never heard that color has relation to the temperament of a cat...I have a black %26 white male DSH and he is extremely affectionate and playful. He will play with anything that moves, is very inquisitive, %26 loves to explore; but he also enjoys just sitting in your lap while you watch TV or sleeping on your back while you take a nap. He just likes being with people. He gets along quite well with the family's Golden Retriever. He's the coolest cat I've ever met.
From experience I would say that color doesn't affect personality to a large degree. Some people believe in the breed stereotypes but they aren't completely true. Of course some follow the rules. You just have to meet a lot of different cats until you find the right one. You'll know as soon has you pick him up if he belongs with you.
,,,Iwouldnt get a black cat if i were you,of all tthe black cats that ive known they had demonic tendancies,if I went to pet one it immidiatly went sraight for my face and another one would hiss and try desperatly to attack me..
It doesn't actually make a difference what colour the cat is, the temperament will be the same. I've had lots of cats in my short lifetime and I've dealt with a lot of cats in the practice where I work and I've never notcied any connection between colours and temperaments.

If you're looking for a cat with an affectionate, laid back and sweet temperament, then I would definitely go for a female cat instead. Males tend to be more agressive, even after neutering, whereas females tend to be more docile. If you're worried about having to take care of kittens, you could always get the cat spayed(female neuter). It might not be as simple as castration(male neuter), but it's still a very straightforward operation done by vets at least once a day. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few female cats in the pound that are already neutered.

Best of luck in your cat hunt.
I have never heard of color affecting the personality of a cat. Growing up I had a long haired black cat that was pretty stand offish around most people, and only liked to attention when he wanted it. Now I have a short haired black cat who is extremely affectionate and has a great temperament. I also have a calico who is stubborn and has a bad temper lol.
any coloured cat has a good temperament, if said cat is inclined in the moment to have a good temperament. all cats are marvelous creatures.
I wish you could tell me where you heard that from. I have had cats for 35 yrs of my life. I have now a pitch black female rescue and she's very affectionate and guards from all violence in the house. For instance, when my 2 large dogs wrestle and it goes too far, she comes running in and starts swinging them paws and breaks it up, or if someones at the door she's the first one to greet and won't back down. My other is a long hair himalayan--I have to admit the most dumbest, talkative, very-very lazy, super cuddly cat i've ever owned and wouldn't get rid of her if i was homeless. She will bathe you from head to toe if you let her. Females are my favorite-just make sure you please have it fixed. All the males i've had are more active, get bored and tend to spray in certain areas around the house. Not all my males did but more so than not. Males are roamers at heart, thats what they do, roam, stalk and prey from a string on the floor to the mouse outside or another cat. If a male smells a female in heat (from more than a mile away), it will drive him crazy! Females to me are the best way to go.
The color of the cat does not effect its temperment however males do tend to be a little more laid back. The truth is that a cat will really take on the personallity of its owner. I know that sounds weird but it is true. My family has two cats that were litter mates and both males, affectionate, and laid back but they have differences to that don't have anything to do with color. My cat is and has some of my personality; loveable and friendly around people he knows and shy around people he doesn't. My mothers cat is a little different he like my mother is constantly outgoing and slightly obsessive compulsive. The family that I cat sit for the cat is so much like the wife very uptight and anxious. Get the color cat you want but when it comes to temperment of the cat treat it affectionatly and lovingly and will be the same way.
Siamese cats are great. They have a personality all their own. Siamese cats that are raised with love and affection will be your best friend. They get very attached to one person and can be possessive. They are so much fun as they are typically very playful and affectionate. I have had several Siamese during my life and each one was great. My last one died a few months ago of a bowel rupture (she was 14 when she died). There are several breeds of Siamese. And yes, you can find them in shelters or animal rescue groups. My current cat is a lilac point Himalayan that I got from a county shelter. I've had her since 1998 and she's 15 now.

What causes periodontal disease in cats?

Answers:
Hey Nancy,

Periodontal disease basically forms when pieces of food and bacteria group along the gumline. This causes plaque, which combines with minerals in saliva that in turn form tartar.

If the tartar isn't removed or cleaned, it can cause irritation to the gumline which develops into gingivitis.

Bad breath, swelling, redness are all signature signs of the problem.

Sometimes when the tartar isn't taken care of, it will group under the gums, which seperates from the teeth causing pockets. Since these pockets are basically bacteria collectors periodontal disease forms as a result.

This is typically when you see cats loosing teeth, and having abscesses.

If you'd like a more thorough explanation, try the following link:
Periodontal disease is fairly common in humans too. It's caused by bacteria build up and severe gum infection. If you're trying to avoid dental problems with your cat you can brush their teeth occasionally (if they'll let you), feed your cat a food geared towards good dental health, and buy some toys that your cat can chew on. I assume this type of disease would be very hard to treat in cats and dogs, because it's so difficult to have dental work done on them without sedation.
There appears to be something of a genetic tendency to it in some breeds, and some lines of cats. It used to be an argument of wet versus dry, but there is many a cat on an all dry diet whose teeth are worse than those on all canned food.

A good idea is to start a kitten out young, with teeth brushing. This can be done with just a brush, or the fingertip brush and flavored cat toothpaste.

Also good for dental health, is the Oxyfresh oral hygeine solution which can be added to their water, and the paste which is rubbed on the gums. You can find their products at www.oxyfreshww.com

For those who prefer natural options, the herbal remedy fragaria will reduce and eliminate tartar build-up which can irritate already inflamed gums. This comes in a tiny pill that can be added to a quart of water and used to refill their dish. It should be purchased in 30C potency, as opposed to 30X for purity.

Gingivitis and tartar often occur at the same time. An affected cat may need a dental cleaning, and then a good regimen of gum and tooth care to prevent a reoccurence.
Esther's explanation is great. My vet recommended NOT feeding my cat canned food all the time. Science Diet has a dry food specifically to remove tartar. Dry food seems to be better than wet food in preventing periodontal disease, but any cat can get it any time. I have to mention that they have little toothbrushes that will fit on your finger and fishy-tasting toothpaste for cats. However, I'd lose my finger if I tried this on my cat. Something like that has to be started from the beginning of his life.

What causes a cat's seeming bipolarism?

Answers:
They're in some way related to women.
your cat being crazy
over pampering the cat and thinking it has real feeings
Actually your cat is just acting like a cat. One minute they love you, the next they don't want to have anything to do with you. Are you the only owner he's had? Sometimes if animals are mistreated they'll demonstrate hostile behavior. I'm a cat lover and have had cats all my life and it seemed that they all had their 'moments'. If he's not hurting you or your furniture just leave him alone for awhile.soon he'll come looking for you. Cats are very aloof...unlike dogs who aim to please. So, you have to think and act like a cat. When he throws a fit turn your back and walk away...no audience, no fit.
stragnely enough, cats can have things like ocd or be bipolar. talk to your vet about it, there may be a chemical imbalance.

What causes a cat to hiss and growl at a human who loves the cat?

Answers:
You've gotten great answers here, but I do have 1 thing to add. I do a lot of rescues. If this is an every once in a while occurrence, it is kind of the same thing as yelling at another human -- environmental cues. I have once and only once rescued a cat that hissed and growled all of the time -- the only cat I know who would hiss and growl while you were petting her and in between purrs. When I started working with her she was about 8 weeks old. She continues to act this way to this date. I think she is just cross-wired and shorting out when she gets to a certain level of stimulation.
Ghosts around you?? or maybe he's mad at you did u feed him? Could be sick,do u have a reg. vet for him?..if so call him if not call an exorcist...lol
The cat may not be feeling well....
you might be touching a sore spot like a bruise or if it is a girl it might be pregnant. or you could've startled it
because the cat is mad
The cat could be in pain, or startled by something it saw or heard. It could also be reacting to a sent on you that it doesn't recognize. My cats will sometimes growl and hiss at me when I come home from work because I've been handling other animals.
Is it a rescue? Sometimes they will have a fear of people if they have been abused by a previous owner. I ahve rescued many cats. Some never seemed to care a fraction as much for me as I did for them. I understood as all had bad things happen in the past.

It maybe in pain. Maybe worth a trip to the vet if this has only just started happening.
Sometimes it can be the way you're holding the animal. Hold cats a lot while they are kittens and they won't mind it as much when they get older.
some cats are feral or partly feral and ha vent socialised with humans so mistrust us or have had a bad experience with humans and tar us all with same brush.if the cat is an outdoors one it has more often than not been chased by humans that are sick of it in their garden either killing birds pooing or simply passing thru or sitting on cars that's annoying cos of scratches they leave
It could be any number of things. Maybe the cat doesn't feel good. Sometimes if you have been petting a strange cat, their smell will stay on your skin. Maybe your cat smells it and dislikes it. I actually had that happen to me once. I had been petting a friends cat and when I tried to pet my cat, he tried to take my arm off. I still have scars.
It could smell the scent of other cats on you. Animals have a more keen sense of smell.
my aunt's cat does this...

each cat has a personality of their own.. her cat is a psycho.maybe yours is too.
Cats like to warm up to people on their own terms. It is likely that the cat lover, is wanting to pet or hold the cat, who has not yet approved of them in their personal space. (think 10 foot rule)
Many times, people who do not like cats, feel that they attract them. This is true. Cats, while inquisitive creatures, are still timid. (scaredy cats) People who try to ignore cats, often find the cats trying to rub on their legs, etc. This is because the cats do not perceive them as a threat.
The way for your cat lover to make nice with this cat, is just to give it some space. IF attempting to pet it, just offer a palm out for the cat to smell. Once the cat rubs its head on the palm, in approval, gingerly try to pet the head - slowly.
The cat will see there is no threat, and that it is "calling the shots," and will warm up to the person.

What cat should i get?

I want an effectionate breed of cat that doesnt malt too much
Answers:
Ragdolls are lovley. They are very affectionate and they dont shed much. They are quite expensive because its a new breed. You can expect to pay around $500+ but it is worth the money. They are pretty easy to care for but need lots of attention.
LOL doesnt malt? You mean shed??

Go to the local animal shelter and find a short haired cat that suits you. Its hard to judge by breed. They have special rooms where you can sit with the cat and see if it has a bond with you. :)
Calicos are the best! They are playful and quite smart... I have one and she is a doll. She is my alarm clock (seriously she wakes me up at the same time everyday by placing her paw on my forehead), my comedian, my comforter and my bookworm (she doesnt like me to study or read so when she sees me doing so she plops in my books/magazines and starts scratching the pages...)

Lastly, calicos stay pretty petite and are not hard to maintain at all. My cat liked her monthly baths and she liked riding around in my car also...

You will have tons of fun spoiling her!
There can be effectionate cats in all breeds.

Please go look at your local SPCA or your local Animal Control. There are MANY homeless animals that are looking for some affection too. And lots of times you can get a good full blooded breed there too. In our city, if you adopt from Animal Control, they give you a certificate for a vet visit so that you can have the animal checked out and tested for various illnesses. If the animal has parvo, or something else and you don't want it, you just take it back to Animal Control and get your money back.

Please consider adopting. I have never been disappointed.
Your best bet is to get the first cat that you "feel".
You can tell by looking at one if it is the right one for you.it will be a "gut" feeling.
All cats shed..unless you get a hairless one.
I have a handsome orange tabby short hair(Butterscotch is his name).and he is the most affectionate cat I have ever had..always on me..and always needing to be by me..even in bed at night he has to be "touching" me in some way.
He is 5 years old on the 7th of June, and I would not take a billion dollars for him.
I wish you luck in finding the cat of your dreams ;-)
You will know when you see it.trust me ;-)
Go to your local shelter, ask a lot of questions of certain cats - no breed is all affectionate. It depends on the cat. You usually have to give them an application before you can take the cat home, so get it in ASAP. It's kitten season, so they are being put to sleep at very high rates right now. Go save one! You will have so many to choose from. They should let you play with the cat and see it's temperment. Remember though that it is a high stress place and they may be more affectionate once they come home.
The PERFECT breed for you is the Devon Rex. They are super affectionate and loyal and their hair is sooo short and fine they barely shed (not malt) very much at all! I LOVE mine!
go to a shelter and see who picks you out.
ALL cats shed no mater what type of hair they have. Every cat needs some sort of grooming to minimize the hair but it will never get rid of all the hairr
get a himilayan or persian. They are soo beautiful and affectionate. Get one with a doll face(pet qualitiy) not a smushed face (show quality). We have both and both are so freaking affectionate that it is sometimes annoying. Lex will come up and lay on whatever you are reading until you pet him and if you try to move him, he moves right back. And Raven.well you just can't get away from her. She loves to lay with you have be petted.
You will know when you see the cat, that that is the one you should get. All cats are special and should be loved. I did find that the Abbysian were extra affectionate.

What cat foods were recalled?

was friskies can cat food one of them?
Answers:
Nope..this is the one time being cheap pays off..friskies is 100% safe!!
no your fine
iiams was one of them. i have three cats and its getting pretty hard to by them food with all the recalls.
?
http://www.menufoods.com/recall...
Pull up the FDA and they will have a listing of all the manufacturers. Also if you are curious about your particular brand or a brand in general just go on their website and they disclose a statement regarding this whole epidemic and what foods were effected and were not.
Uuhhh . . .I woud say Friskies canned cat food is considered safe at this point, but not the best diet a cat can be on. Canned food isn't best for a cat, dry is. Dry food helps to break down tartar and plaque buildup on their teeth. Canned food allows it to build up quickly, causing dental problems including tooth loss. I encourage you to switch your cat to a dry diet, and try a higher quality one!

What cat do you like.?

Answers:
I like a cat with a lot of personality and a sense of humor. I like a cat sweet and cute, but independent, communicative and appreciative. And of course I love my cats best. They are a brother and a sister - the male is a "tuxedo" type and looks and acts like Shamu. He chirps like a sweet little bird and tries to open doors and cabinets. Sometimes he succeeds. His sister is a "faded calico" with slightly long fine fur. She is a sponge for love.
My cat of course!
I love long haired but my favorite is the Scottish Fold, they are too cute!
Defently a Raggdoll or Raggamuffin.
i like tabbys. the fur is just the right length and they are soo cute.
I love the Applehead siamese the best, they are great companions because they have the grace of a deer, the mind of a dog and are decendants of siam royalty definatly the cat for me
I like Norwegian Forest cats and of course the tabby cat. I've got a ton of cats and one is a tabby... he's such a sweetheart.
the type of cat called the mancoon there awesome
Well I have a siamese cat but she is hairy and looks much better so if you get a siamese let it get a little hairy.
Persian, Mainecoon, and Snowshoe.
definitely tabby.
traditional siamese
Bengal cats, but that's not the kind I have. This one is just as nice.
my cats are the one i like most
Orange cats and shelter cats, or a mixture of both.
My kitty rocks! But she is kinda weird...

What cat breed should I get?

Hi. Me and my family are living overseas in Germany. We may stay here for 6 more years, if my dad gets a civilian job once he retires out of the military.

So if we stay, we're probably going to get a cat. What breed of cat should we get? I want one that's sociable, not to hyber and needy, one that won't scratch up everything (we are NOT declawing it). I'd prefer an indoor, or primarily indoor cat, I'm always seeing cat road-kill, and always hearing about how someone's cat got killed by a coyote (in the states), a hawk, owl, fox, or whatever-there are a lot of foxes and hawks here. We have a dog, a large golden retriever, male, that will be about 1 and a half-2 years old by the time we'd be getting the cat, and I don't know how fast this 1 would mellow out (hes a brute too lol). Also, I'd prefer a water-tolerant one that won't attack my caged pets. I also know that I need to get it early to help with its temperment to people.
Answers:
Honestly, all kittens are hyper, no matter the breed. I'd suggest getting an adult cat from a shelter or breed rescue group. The shelter staff or foster owners should be familiar with their cats' temperaments, and should be able to help you find the best match for your household. You may even be able to find one that has lived with dogs before %26 is known to get along well with them. I wouldn't trust any cat not to go after your caged pets, unless it has a history of good behavior with them. Or, you could grin %26 bear through the kitten madness, and get a kitten who has NEVER been outdoors and wasn't taught by his mother to hunt, and raise it around the small caged pets.

Turkish Van cats are a breed that likes water. http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/tu...

To prevent inappropriate scratching behaviors, this link has excellent training info:
http://www.catscratching.com
don't know breed name, but it has black body, and usually has white paws, those cats r awesome
A maine coon would be a good choice. I had one for 6 years and she was a brilliant cat. she was very loveable.

I just thought of a wonderful breed. A manx. They're great. =]
Get a Bengal Cat. Altho don't expect it to be energy free. It loves water tho.
Just 2 let u know, shelter animals r awesome. i got my tabby from the Dumb Friends League in Denver and he is really sweet, he doesn't scratch the couches and he's wonderful. get a shelter kitty. i have a shelter dog and she luuuuuuvs people. shelter animals are good.
Another choice is the Rag Doll breed. They are everything you mentioned you were looking for plus some!
it all depends. all cats are diffrent. but if you get a cat that was raised indoors, and has never been out side, that is your best bet.
Persains are really good. I have one, and he has an aweosme personality. He's very relaxed, and has his spaz moments. He's playful, and an indoor cat. you shouldn't have Persains as outdoor cats. i have a dog, and they get along quite well. They are extremely cute, and aren't jumpy. There social with anybody, and are just very lovable. I would recommend a Persain to anyone anyday.

Good luck with your future kitty!
I had a minx cat one time. He was so sweet. As far as a cat that won't claw and scratch you furniture up I have never heard of one. Good luck!
it really depends on the type of cat that fits to your liking. many have different personalities. try asking your animal shelter or vet about the behavbiors and personality of cats or read some of the books. it can help quite alot.
u should get a dog dude... ( :
Calicos are so pretty, and I think very temperamental
eek, not a Persain, they're mean. Please rescue one. You'll be able to tell their temperament when you visit.
Forget breeders. All they do is perpetuate overpopulation in order to make money. Go to the shelter and get a pet. Ask the shelter personnel about the background of the animals they have. All cats will scratch -that's just cats. You need to keeps its claws clipped. Good for you about not declawing - it's barbaric.

You do have the right idea - your cat should be neutered or spayed and never allowed outside, both for its own protection and for the protection of wildlife.

What gender depends on the animal you choose. Each cat is an individual and has its own little personality.
I recommend Siamese. They are one of the most dog-like of cats.
barn cats are good(its not a breed they just used to live in barns) but they do like the outside
persians are sweet but you need to comb it perfectly every day!
Firstly, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for wanting to keep kitty indoors and for choosing NOT to declaw! Good for you, and don't let anyone change your mind.

Secondly, what you need is a kitty who is calm, docile, requires limited attention, and gets along great with people and other animals. Based upon this, I recommend that you get an Exotic Shorthair. They are calm and docile just like Persians. They are perfect for busy people who like the appearance of Persians but who also don't want to contend with the grooming requirements, which was the motivation for crossing the Persian with shorthairs until the resulting Exotic was born. An Exotic is a wonderful companion. You should get a female Exotic if you require lots of private time, as the males are more affectionate and demanding of rubs and lap time. The females, on the other hand, enjoy time to themselves to investigate all the little things in life, such as dripping water faucets and bugs flying around the house. They always seem to have something more important to do than humoring their owners. Although they will sometimes follow you around from room to room just to be close to you. Most Exotics get along with other cats and animals. Although, if you have mice or other rodents, it's advisable that you make sure their ''houses'' are secure since the Exotic does tend to take a playful interest in these critters.

Exotics, while they do have their playful moments (particularly the kittens), they are very quiet and easy going. They are peaceful and loyal companions who are not easily disturbed. They seldom ''meow'', and, while they enjoy the presence of their guardians, they are very independent. And since they have a thick, dense, short coat, unlike Persians, grooming is extremely low maintenance. Their fur never tangles or mats (one of the reasons why Exotics are often referred to as "the lazy man's Persian"). They are adorable, as their coats give them a sort of ''teddy bear'' look.

If possible, try to get a kitty from a cat rescue. It's a rewarding experience to know that you're helping a kitty as much as he/she is helping you. 鈾?
wall breed have quirks advantages and disadvantages I personally stay away from long hairs as while they can be very loving cats the fur get everywhere and every morning you need to de-fur your clothes
water tolerance and cats do not naturally come together but can be trained while is how cats are often of sailing vessels.

and I recommend spaying unless you get a pure bread breeder but also remember the purebreds are often a bit inbred thus are often higher maintenance.

I also recommend front declaring only unless it is an outdoor cat as all cats scratch so if you like you furniture you do it
other wise if not you have to be religiously with clipping there front claws very close which is often more torment for the cat over time then declawing not to mention the verbal abuse of always yelling at the cat when they naturally scratch
just make sure you get a good doctor when your doing it as just as you would not go to the cheapest surgeon so why would you do that for your pet

also with all the issues I suggest going with organic pet food
A maine coon would shed too much. just get any shorthair cat doesnt have to be purebred most 'pound' cats have varied personalities you can easily find one to fit your needs search the internet or go to the pound

What can you use to get rid of fleas on a six-week-old kitten?

Answers:
Try gently bathing your kitten, this will get rid of some but not all. I had the same problem when i got my cat, What i did was get a nit comb and a bowl of very hot water (just keep it away from kitty) then i combed my cats fur til a flea got stuck in the teeth then i used a needle to get the flea into the hot water and this kills em! I repeated this every day til he was old enough for frontline. Failing this ask your vet for advise.
Take it to the vet, they will be the only ones to have the correct products for this.
Talk to a vet...
All I can say is do not try to give it a bath.
I tried that one time and it was NOT pleasant. All the fleas rushed to its face and gathered around its eyes.
The vet has diff. flea meds for diff. weight classes. Just check with the vet. DO NOT use the stuff in stores they don't work and it's bad for their skin. I've had exp. in both depts here. I just went to the vet %26 in a few sec. of putting the meds. on it they started dying off...they fleas that is :)
sevan dust.buy it at walmart
Go to the pet store. They can show which things are safe for a kitten.
A daily bath with kitten safe shampoo and pluck the fleas off with a pair of tweezers and a jar of water to put them in. Did that for the first three days, then every seven days or so for 2 days in a row, and after a month there were no more fleas. Be sure to wash his bedding every day and vacuum the areas he is in while he is being dried off.
Use "Frontline Plus". It worked on my kitty
It's going to take awhile, but the safest way to go is to pick each one of them off and make sure you kill them. It isn't good to use flea medicine on kittens that young.
If you are just wanting to get them off the kitten, you can do that by giving your kitten a bath, It is kinda harsh, but use a detergent soap, like dawn dish soap, make sure you rinse the kitten very very well. Your vet will have some sprays, and flea preventitive for your kitten, that is what you really need. You need to get the flea issue nipped as soon as possible, or else you can get an infestation in your home...

Good Luck
A kitten that young may be too young for many remedies. Go to your vet. There is a product called Ovitrol that is safe on young kittens. You spray it on a cloth and gently rub the kitten, avoiding eyes.
Check with your vet or a pet store. I would recommend a flea mouse, but there are certain chemicals you should avoid like pyrethrins.
it's going to be best to take it to a vet to see what can be done, because most of the shampoo's out there for fleas and even the collars have a certain age limit on it.
You cant treat kittens that young. But you can give them baths, and treat the area they are sleeping in. Borax (laundry soap) can be sprinkled in the area...let it sit over night...then vaccum the next day. Do this for a week and you will see less and less fleas. But, you can bathe them. Just dont use strong soap as it can dry out their skin.
I was told by a vet to use rubbing alcohol. Put some on a wash cloth and rub them with it. I also bathed mine when they were little all the time. My cat is easy to bath because of this. My other cat, I did not bathe when it was young because I did not get her till she was 8 weeks old. She try's to kill me if I bathe her, so I quit bathing her.

What can you do for cats that dont pee in there litter box?and why do they do that?

Answers:
Firstly, is this a new development? If your cat has used the litter box before and is suddenly not doing so, he or she most likely has a urinary tract infection or disease (stones, sand, etc).

If your cat has never used a litter box it's because they don't understand what it is yet. Most cats will instinctually be attracted to the litter as a good place to do their business, but some cats just don't get it. There are ways to train them to use it, but that wasn't in your question so I won't go into it =P
There are many parts to this answer. First, how old is the cat and has it used the box before? You may be dealing with a urinary problem that should be checked by a vet. Have you changed the manufacturer/type of litter recently? This can cause cats to eliminate outside the box. Have you added another cat to the household? You may need addtional boxes. If you are not dealing with an infection, which only your vet can determine, try "Cat Attract" litter. It's excellent at re-training your cat to the box.

Is your cat a male? Has it been fixed? How old is it? The most common reason is to mark their territory when they become sexually mature at approx 6 mon old. Its called spraying and male cats will do this to leave their scent. If this is the case, it is very hard to correct once it has started. The 1st step for this scenario is to get the cat fixed. I hope this helped, You didn't give much information to work off of.
Well i have 2 cats and if the litter box smells a little one of them refuses to use the box and pees on the clothes [the box is in the laundry room]. so the box has to be cleaned quite frequently. I also know that my manager's cat has done the same thing, she refuses to pee in the box. She has gone to the vet and everything seems to be fine, so my manager has now put down a puppy-pee-pee pad at a specific spot in the house and the cat has now learned to pee on that instead of on the carpet. Check with your vet first and try to figure out if they've got an infection. If not try these! .. good luck
if it's not clean or there's another cat that also uses it then it will deter a cat using it.

What can we do to stop our cat to play-attack us?

We have a 4 1/2 month old cat (not neuteredt yet) who plays during every minute that he is awake. The problem is that this playing often involves attacking us or whatever is lying inside the house (his toys, boots, chair legs, etc). Not only is it annoying, but we also do not like that he tries to bite and scratch our feet and hands all the time (which he does whenever he can reach them). Any suggestions for curbing that behaviour? Thanks!!!
Answers:
use a squirt gun when it attacks.
Cat Nip
It is natural for cats to want to do that. My cats all did the same thing but he will grow out of it. You can get soft claws so that way he cant scratch you anymore but please do not declaw your cat. He is only trying to play with you and so anything you may do may make him feel like he cant play with you. You can use a spray bottle for the negative things he does and just give him a little squirt and he should stop after a couple of times.
Firstly get him neutered, which will help calm him down and reduce his chances of testicular cancer in later life.

His behaviour is natural for his age - he has a lot of energy. When he's playing with you he's practicing his hunting skills. Cats enjoys toys that imitate hunting, so you can try tying a small toy to a piece of string that he can chase. There are also toys that dangle off the end of a wand stick, so that he can practice his leaping skills. Even a scrunched up piece of paper is fun for kittens to pat and chase around. When you play with him, don't let it involve your hands, as if he gets a bit rough he won't be able to differentiate between your hand and the toys. If he continues to play rough and bites you, gently scruff his neck and say "no" in a firm voice, this should be enough to make him stop. If however he carries on, then stop playing immediately and walk away from him, as this will teach him that biting is not acceptable behaviour.

If you can afford it, taking on a second kitten is a good option as it gives him a playmate. I have two and they love to play fight with each other all the time. I live in an apartment so it's a good way for them to burn off their energy.

If you keep him as the only cat, just be patient, he will eventually grow out of it and calm down.

Good luck.
When we neutered our cat he did not "calm" down and stop play attacking us. Our vet recommended getting toys that you and your cat can play with together to keep something in between you and him, and praise him for not biting or scratching when you play by giving him his favorite treat after wards. If he continues to bite and scratch, don't hit him to punish him that will just make it worse, but pet stores carry bitter apple spray, dilute it with water in a separate spray bottle and squirt once him if he continues to bite and scratch you. Its also good to use to keep the cat off of tables and counters. You can spray it on your furniture to if you want them to stay off of it as well. It does not hurt them, it puts a nasty bitter taste in their mouth, and he'll eventually quit.
If your cat is black, good luck. Try spraying it with vinegar water.

What can we do as cat lovers?

to help enforce a leash law for cats in our neighborhoods, communities, towns, cities, counties, states and our whole country?
Answers:
and what can we do about the cats that pizz all over our trees and plants?
Start a petition.
Sorry, but no one is going to leash our barn cats. We live out in the country and they roam free. Their job is to catch %26 kill rodents and they do a terrific job! They are all fixed and all have their shots. You don't leash a cat.
I don't think cats belong on leashes.
I have cats. There is no way in hell either of them would rock a leash. They would strangle themselves.

That would be a BS law.
um, no..I'm a cat love of 3, and 2 go outdoors and LOVE it. THEY both have their nails and are spayed. I coudln't allow them to not be able to run free. What exactly are u suggesting. Cats are really intelligent and deserve to express there outdoor predator senses as much as possible. They get by just fine, and if trained right, they don't go around strangers.
What a misleading question. Why would a cat lover want to enforce leash laws?

What can we do about the un-informed on the recall?

I feel sorry for the pets whose owners don't have computers or access to the internet to check for updates on the recalls. I think anywhere that sells pet food ought to be forced to have an updated report on the pet foods in their windows. I know of some immigrants who had 7 dogs die who did not even know about the recall. They do not have a good command of the English language and try explaining wheat gluten to them!
The FDA did a random sampling of stores and they found 400 stores still had tainted food on the shelves!
Anyone have suggestions?
Answers:
I have gone to my local grocery store with a 100 page recall list and posted it in the pet food aisle for people to see. I checked myself. The store didn't have any recalled food on the shelves. I heard on the news that some stores put the recalled food on sale. I guess we need a call for volunteers.
yes i know that
I know there have been some area Walmart's that had some recalled product on shelves. I think a good thing to do is to take a recall list and anyone can go into stores and check products on the shelves and if any are on the recall list, tell the store manager and they have to take it off the shelves. If they don't do it immediately, tell them you are reporting their store to the FDA and to local media. Then do that.
At least the stores don't want media attention about their neglect. Then tell offending stores you will be back at random times to make sure the product stays off the shelf.
Also, I hope those immigrants reported their dogs deaths to the FDA because even if the product was recalled, the fact that it killed their dogs, the FDA has very few dogs listed as dead due to tainted food compared to what has actually happened.
Another possiblity is to picket a store that continues to put recalled food on shelves. That would be a media story.
I am glad you are posting these updates, too, because many people are not aware of the continued updates and many pet stores, even major ones, wait until they get notice from their corporate headquarters before removing recalled food, meaning it will likely be on their shelves and sold for a day or two, then pulled.
So another thing is to take a few area Pet Stores and check their stock and take a printed list (like from the company) of breaking recall info and give it to the manager informing them they have that product on their shelves.
I think you're right on the money there. Force the shop owners to let the public know about it, or face heavy penalties like lose their business.
Many Pet stores such as PetSmart and PetCo keep updated records on the recall. honestly with as many ppl in our country who do not understand our language it is almost impossible to inform them all. Many grocerie stores such as Kroger and Walmart and other places do not really care. so in order for ppl to be sure that they can be updated about the recall i recommend that they go to a PetSmart in there area. i know that PetSmart keeps there list updated every single day and that all products are taken. As for the ppl who didn't realize there pets were sick there really were some very obvious symptoms and while i feel for them there is just no way to let everyone know when they are unable to communicate with the rest of the community.
I wish the Animal Planet channel would do something.like have one of those news banners running at the bottom at all times.

What Can We Do about ours fighting Cats?

We have 3 cats. A mutured 11/2 year old male. a non-spayed 2 year old female and a 3 year old fenale.
Recently past few days, the two females have not been getting alone.
In fact they have been fighting, so we have been having to isolate them in different rooms. The non-sprayed female is in heat and she seems to be the agressor in most instances. But up until now they always got along reasonsbley well.
What could be the cause of this sudden behavioral changes, and what can we do to get them to at least tolerate each other, without having to put them in separate rooms or get rid of one of them?
Answers:
well you have one male and two females? i think that the females are fighting over the male like two males can fight hours on end over one female.it is natural. and since they have been separated then they may have got used to being away from the male and not be interested any more. like in human nature. a girl could like a man one day and be arguing the next then make up and then argue...get the point!? it is probably just a mating faze. (they had better be neutered!) :0)
No worries Hun XXXXX
hormones are the likely cause of her aggression because she is in heat and especially because there's a male around. you should get her spayed. the best idea is to get them all spayed but since one is especially aggressive focus on her for now.
Hormones can be a bi tch. Get them spayed and I bet the behavior will improve greatly
Get the one that is the aggressor spayed, she is in heat and that's why she is acting this way, take her to the vet for neutering and you'll notice the difference in her behavior, when you bring her home. Once they are all neutered they'll get along again like they did before, Hope this helps.
let them get used to eachother or get them all nutered
get them all neutered cats can get REAL nasty and it hurts when u get involved!

What can we do about our rescue kitten (about 1 year old) tormenting one of our older cats & making it nervous

Answers:
Time will hopefully make it better. Since the cat is only 1 years old, it probably has a lot more energy than the older cat and wants to play. Get the 1 year old some toys. Hopefully that will distract the kitten.
Give your older cat a lot of attention, because he may feel jealous of the new cat.
Here is a novel Idea! Make the kitten behave! How, you ask? buy a water gun,and when he is doing something you don't want, say stop and squirt his face with water.
You have to introduce the kitten slowly to the other cats11
The older cats are not as energetic as the kitten. They need a place where they can get away from the kitten.
Make sure each cat has its owner litter box. That can really cause you a lot of problems if not.
Your kitten may need a time out once in awhile. Do you have a crate where you can put it once in awhile so the others can get out and play.
It will take time and the other will come around if they are given the time to do so. If not given the time they may never get along.
Doing it slowly is so important. Let the cats be around together for short periods of times then take the kitten into another room. Before you know it the cats will come looking for the kitten.
Good Luck
it wants to mate just keep them apart for a bit

What can I use to tranquilize my cat ?

I am moving house soon and have to drive 900 miles with my two cats. One is just over a year and her son is still a very tiny kitten. What can I use to tranquilize the older cat ? I know you can get tablets for dogs but is there anything I can use for the cat ?
Answers:
Hi hun.

I saw my vet about the same thing just to enquire, and he actually said that he refuses to tranquilise cats because they do not respond to it in the same way that dogs do. He said that tranquilising them can stress them out even more and causes them to fall about inside their carrier when the car goes around corners.

Never buy over the counter tranquilizers for your kitties, especially the very young one. The best thing you can do is visit the vet and seek professional advice from him. There may be a weak tranquilizer that is suitable for your kitten.

If your vet says the same thing as my vet, you may have to consider stopping over in a pet-friendly hotel when you move house, to break up the journey for them. Alternatively, but or rent one of those grates that you place behind the front seats, so that your cats can stretch their legs in the back without it being dangerous. Obviously you will have to drive very slowly if you take this option.

A final option is to get them used to having a harness and take numerous breaks through the journey to let them out and take them for a walk at a service station. They will probably also need the toilet during the long trip.

One very final option is to put them both in pet carriers, but stop at service stations every 2 hours and let them out inside the car for 15 minutes to use the litter tray and stretch their legs. My cat just sleeps in his pet carrier, but the longest he's been in it is 3 hours, I don't know what yours are like or whether they get stressed :-)

Acepromazine is what my vet recommends for cats for things that would cause anxiety such as going to the groomers or to the vet's office. Ask your vet if that would be good for your cat and how much to give. It doesn't knock them out, it just takes the edge off for a few hours.
A mallet
go the the vet if you can. they will perscribe you an inexpensive tranq pill just for cats.

if you are looking for over-the-counter, melatonin is a good start. just remember, for anything you give a cat that is people strength cut it in half, or even in 1/4, and test it to see how they react.
Half brick in a sock.
Sometimes the tranquilizers do not work, and only agitate the cat. I would get Bach's Rescue Remedy, and start to use that. Shake the bottle very well and put a couple of drops between the ears, and it will absorb. It is a natural remedy and will not harm your cat. Also some recommend the Feliway spray, I have never used it, but I'm sure someone will tell you about it. You can use the Rescue Remedy, 2-3 times a day, and also put it in their water.
i would use something called serene um from a pet shop especially if she is still nursing as this is a natural product and contains amino acids which really do work. don't use anything that she will pass to a little kitten it could be dangerous to him. serene um can be got from a good pet shop contains no chemicals but would need to be given everyday for a fornight before the move. i also use lavender wheat bags for calming my cats on any journey and they sleep through out. try natural remedies rather than chemicals ones my vet always tries the holistic approach first for this sort of thing as the chemicals can cause more harm than good. another good thing is the feliway spray this works everytime with my queen, she is in hospital and is stressed because she is away from her babies and they are using feliway and i have never seen a calmer cat.
Sure you can tranq. a cat with drugs if you would like but a trick I have found to work well when I have take my cats to a cat show or on a plane is to pet them and give them a little attention to calm them down, gently place them in a carrier, them put some catnip in the carrier with them. The catnip is a natural sedative for cats, which is why they act sort of loopy when you give it to them. I usually don't recommend prescription sedatives for traveling cats because of the possible side effects and adverse reactions they can have. You would hate to find out your cat stopped breathing or had a reaction when you are in a strange place and don't know where to go for help. Most cats do extremely well with car trips as long as they are in a carrier and relatively calm before you take off. Hope I was able to help.
There are pills for tranquilizing cats just like there are for dogs. You can buy them at a vet's office.
I agree with Kittymom. Why put drugs into your cat when flower essences will do the job? Of course with the essences you have to make more frequent applications and you can also do it when you see a need for it.

Actually if the cats are in a comfortable carrier they should do fine. The steady movement of the car will enduce them to take a good nap anyway. It doesn't hurt to "fast" cats for 24 hours either. I would feed them late in the night before you leave and wait for a stop later in the day or at the end of the trip to feed again.
you can do many of the things the other are recommending you, (dont sit on them), 鈽?

But you may not believe this but classical music makes them even go to sleep
Talk to your vet, he is one with the answer, he probably knows your cat and would be able to advise you as to what is alright for her, she has to be awake for her baby.
I had the same situation with my cat last year, we moved 300 miles and wanted something to make him sleepy on the journey. Go to the vet, they will prescribe a pill and also tell you exactly how to give it to your cat, the timing is key! We gave our cat 1/2 the tablet (it all depends on their size too) an hour before we left and he sat on my lap all the way, he didn't sleep, but he also wasn't fully aware if you know what I mean. He just sat on me purring for the whole journey and then went to sleep when we arived. It took a while for it to wear off though, he was unsteady on his feet for the whole day and night. Just remember though that when he comes round he will be scared by his new suroundings and may go into hiding for a few days until he knows where he is.

Hope it goes well
As long as they re all moving together, it will be alright, once you arrive they!l settle in. Its a bit of a distance, but it!s got to be done, surely vet can help advise.
I would go and talk to your vet - he or she will help, but you could try to acclimatise the cats to being in the car and going for journeys before you move by taking them in their carriers for short journeys just so they get used to the sensation. You would have to be consistent though - it may help stop them from being so scared

Good luck with your move
When I left the UK several years ago I took my 17 year old cat with me. As I knew that we would have a twelve hour drive from the airport to our destination, I trained her to walk on a harness before hand so that we could both stop for toilet breaks and to stretch our legs. During the journey she sat on my lap and was okay, except that every time we went under a bridge she ducked down. As you have two cats it might be easier for them to travel in a pet carrier but it needs to be large enough for the cat to lay down, so that if she is relaxed enough to sleep she's able to do so in comfort and she could also have her kitten with her. I'm not sure, but under UK regulations it may be illegal for cats to travel loose in the car as it may be considered a safety issue, so you may want to check out whether the pet carrier would be compulsory. I also carried some bottled water and dried food with me so that she had access to them if she wanted.

My own vet advised against tranquilisers for either the initial flight (they can't steady themselves if there is any air turbulence) or the car journey.

How does your cat cope with short car journeys at the moment, as this will help you make a decision. The Feliway spray is also a good alterntive to a sedative as it does seem to have a calming effect on many cats. Your vet will be able to advise you about your options and when is the best time to feed her before the journey, particularly if she is still feeding her kitten.

Good luck.

What can I use to safely sedate my cat so I can clip his claws?

Answers:
Use a towel. it is simple and you only have to work with one paw at a time. Simply wrap them up in a towel like you would a new born. Place it on your lap and start from front to back. it may take a few time to get it down so maybe have someone else there with you. If it doesn't work after the second time take them to the vet to get them trimmed.
Don't they have pet ease at Petsmart. I heard that is suppose to calm them. I don't know about sedating them, maybe you should take him to the vet or groomer. It's seriously like 10 bucks! If you can't afford that then you shouldn't own a pet.
We use Catnip
Sedation is unnecessary. But anything you give a cat should be prescribed by a vet. I'm sure that same vet can show you the best way to clip your cats claws without sedating the cat. I clip 2 cats claws on a regular basis. If there's ALWAYS a food reward after and you do it quickly (human clippers work best for me) then it's over fairly quickly. It would have to be a freakishly vicious cat for me to even CONSIDER sedating the cat. It's pretty easy to overpower a cat with one arm and hold the paw with that same arm while you quickly clip off the sharp edges with the opposite hand. If you do it right, the only weapon the cat will have is its teeth %26 ability to wiggle...but if you position yourself properly the cat won't even have a chance to struggle.
Your love! Hug him, Kiss him, give him a treat or something he likes to nibble on,whuile you gently clip the nails. Catnip moght make him go wilder, roll over and you could hurt him., I would not suggest you gave him catnip, unless it calms him down.
I kinda agree with Teresa. It also helps if you don't go about it with a great deal of intention. Cats are great at picking up on your energy and if you come at them they sense that they are going to be subjected to something they don't like. So just have the clippers handy in some place where you and the cat relax together. Get one or two nails and then leave it for another time. You'll get them all eventually. Also when you and your cat are relaxing together take time to massage his paws - cats really like this (if you've ever had a foot massage you know how great it feels!). That will make him accept your handling his paws when the nails need clipping.
If your cat needs sedation to clip nails, than I would consider letting a vet or groomer do it for you. Any sort of sedation medication should be prescribed and/or given by a vet anyway - not something you should do on your own. The metabolic pathways of a cat are very susceptible to medication, and many safe things for people (or even dogs), can be toxic for cats.

Vets, vet techs, groomers, or other people in the animal care industry would be able to clip the nails without much problem. Typically, they do charge a fee, but it's rather small - like $5-$10.

You can try one last thing before consulting a vet or groomer. Usually, if you scruff a cat (grip the excess skin at the back of the neck, but not too tight), you can immobilize the cat. Mother cat's do that when they move their kittens, or when they're "scolding" them. They react instantly by calming. I had to do that when I first got my male cat. I couldn't clip his nails otherwise. Now, though, he's ok.
Please Don't even try this! Not even the groomers are usually knowledgable about this as they should. If your cat is really that bad that you feel he needs to be sedated then you should find a good groome from word of mouth. They can have more than one person hold the cat so it doesn't need to be sedated.
A veterinarian
Take it to the vet if you think it needs sedated. it wont cost much

What can I use to keep my cat off my printer? he jumps on it and hits the power button.?

Answers:
Try Sticky Paws, or double sided tape, if you don't mind your printer being sticky for a little while. Cats don't like the sticky feeling, and will keep off whatever you stick it to. I had a problem with my cats jumping up on my flat screen tv, and making it wobble precariously, and Sticky Paws did the trick. A few jumps on it, and they decided not to do it anymore. Its not permanent and leaves no residue, so you can remove it once your cat learns not to jump up on the printer.
Put an upside-down box over it when not in use.
squirt him with a water gun(at close range so not to wet your equipment) or place crumbled up tin foil on it. they don't like to walk on it
you might try putting a plastic bowl on top of it so it has no where to sit
My cat does that.
U have to live with it or move the printer I guess.
Or u can put something over the printer button.
Good luck.
Move your printer... or put moth balls near your printer...
aww thats cute err =p cats have their own favorite spot to lie down.. so i suggest you get a mat placed within the periphery of the printer. Soon he'l choose to just lie down on the mat and not jump on your printer.
Your cat is very smart. He/she wants to do what you do. He/she is showing you that he can help you out. Some cats play the piano. So here's what you do. Don't punish him/her. Put your printer in a closet door. I have mine on a shelf in my office behind a closed "closet" type door. You know a cabinet. You are lucky to have a smart cat. My cat likes to dial the phone. Have a great day!
He does this because he wants attention, and he wants to be around you. I take it you are at the computer a lot? My parents had the same problem with their cat. They came up with a good solution for it.

Take a piece of shag carpet, about 1 1/2 feet by 1 feet, and find a place for it on your computer desk. The cat will end up lying on it, and all you have to do is pet it once in a while.
Roll a piece of paper up and hit the cat with it. Tell him no when you do it. Every time he gets up there hit him with that paper.
My cat was taught that it's not allowed to jump onto tables of any kind, kitchen counters, anything like that is out of bounds. We've been persistent, so kitty avoids tables etc.
Ever had a paper jam or malfunction due to cat hairs? LOL!
get a spray bottle, fill with water, spray him when he is on it, or about to jump on it

What can I use to get rid of ants in the house that will not be harmful to my cat?

Answers:
just used ant kill... its a liquid that ants love to eat, they take it back to their nest and it kills the whole nest.

just pour it into cracks or places where your cat cant reach.
.
Baby powder in the corners of { where ever your ants are} I use this and my dog has no interest in it. It works and is Cheap. Good Luck
cornmeal and cayenne pepper
a good way to off the little buggers (are they sugar ants?the teeny ones) mix Ajax or some other scrubbing product Bon Ami or something with karo syrup (or something sweet) tuck it away on your countertop (I used a bottle cap) they will be attracted to the sweet substance but the Ajax cleanser will stick to their feet - they take this back to the next and it's fatal.

I use this and my cats have to eat on the counter (my dog steals their food) and they've never bothered the stuff..You can use a commercial product called Terro, which contains Borax. It comes in a little bottle and you put it on a piece of cardboard and put it on the path the ants are taking. We use several as soon as we see ants.
DO NOT buy ant spray from a shop, it only work when it is 1st put down, when the air gets to it, it stops working, as it drys up,,, i was told this today off rentokil.

use those small white/ blue ant boxes, odor free and safe for your cat, only thing with them is,,,, they only hold a few ants at anytime, so make sure you check on them about twice a day and empty it out.
when I lived down south we used grits. put a small amount of grits in a small bottle cap and place where the ants can get to it. make sure you have plenty of water near by. The way it should work is the ants eat the grits then go for the water, they drink the water and it makes them swell up and pop.
what I have found that works the best: we had a major ant problem last year, was to mix borax and icing sugar and place it in places where the ants are coming from, they take it back to the queen and it kills her. It worked for us.
I hope this helps
Bay leaves are natural, nontoxic and easily available. They are recommended by several home remedy books.
At the restaurants I have worked in, we used salt. I'm not sure how it effects cats, so I would check on that.
Anything with Orange or Citrus Oil in it. Lemon Oil would work also. They run from the stuff.

What can i use for tapeworms in pregnant cat?

My cat has tapeworms can then hurt the kittens?
Answers:
Any type of Strongid medicine is used for tapeworms but with her being pregnant you should probably call the vet and see what they recomend. You should probably do it ASAP. Good Luck.
Ahh another stupid question... No offense.

Take her to a vet! If she has tapeworms she needs meds!! Esp. if she is preggo!!
Hello... ASK A VET beings she's a pregnant cat !! Take Care :)
u can get a pill from ur vet, mine said it was safe for cats/kittens,etc.talk 2 a vet.the pill runs about 6 dollars in the us,u dont even have to bring the cat in.
***IT'S A GREAT NEW PRODUCT, it's called

"CALL THE DAMN VET" and you can get it over the phone. It's listed under "veterinarians" in the phone book. Most new cat owners ( and apparently even some old cat owners) have never heard of it, but it is EXCELLENT.

What can I put on a sore on my kittens neck to help it heal?

My 10 month old orange tabby has scratched himself raw on his neck under his chin. Why would he do that and what can I put on it that he wont get sick licking? I don't believe he has fleas, he's an indoor cat and I havent seen any sign of them. He doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. I clipped his nails so they aren't so sharp now.
Answers:
If anything you might want to take him to the vet so they can check for a skin infection. My puppy had one and he did the same thing to himself. He was put on antibiotics and it cleared up within a week and hasn't come back(this was 4 months ago). Good luck and I hope he gets better!!
sav for man or beast.
neosporin
If it's under his chin and he can't reach it you can put regular antibiotic ointment on it, just like you would if it were on your body. It won't hurt him and it will help it heal up. You should also go ahead and give him a flea bath, and try to find out if something is irrating his neck that is making him scratch it, otherwise it's likely to happen again.
Okay go to the store and go where they sell lotion and things and look for a green square container called Bag Balm, not sure if I spelled it right. This will help and is safe to use on all animals. You can find it at Wal-Mart or at your local pet store.
I had a cat that did the same thing, and we tried everything to keep him from scratching, but we finally ended up taking him to the vet. They gave us some medicine that cleared up the raw area, the cat had, and that took care of it.
I used the equate antibiotic cream from wal mart behind my cats ear and healed great.
call your vet and ask for otamax, (spelling my not be correct) my fiancee works for a vet and they pass this stuff of like candy. Its a topical ointemnt, and its used for everything! Scratches, bites, ear mites, its great stuff! It comes in a tube with a long red cap. Also for his nails, you may want to look into rubber nail caps that glue and fit over their natural nails. Its a safe alternative to having them declawed and would help with the scatching.
Joe you can use neosporen.but have the cat checked for worm yes worm if it's a scalely flakie spot thats ring worm it happens from other cats or even outside from the dirt but you can use neosporen rub it in good and it will heal but go see the vet she might have a allergy too if you have rugs

What can I put in the litter tray to stop it smelling?

My last cat got ran over which I am still very upset about. I am getting two kittens in few weeks and I don't want them to go outside unless I am with them so they will be using the litter tray a lot more
Answers:
I found the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT carbon odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. and gels and oils that say keep away from fabric, etc. and just don't eliminate odors. Just clip a couple of these on the litter box. I use this product everywhere including car (smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying
you can get freshener to sprinkle on but this could deter them using it really
Buy this...

why wont you let them out?..cats need to go out,its natural.as for the smell, dont use one?
try cleaning it
There are some low odour cat litters around. A squirt or two of Flash from a spray bottle helps too.
just make sure you clean it regularly and us like fresh step it works well but the most important thing is to clean it
Baking soda seems to be a common thing to mix with the litter. I've never done it, though. I scoop multiple times a day, and fully clean the box weekly.

With kittens, you may be more inclined to fully cleaning the box more often. When I fostered kittens (8 weeks old), I used clay based litter, and pan liners. Emptied %26 renewed the litter every day. Went through a lot of liners %26 litter that way, but it worked rather well.

Thank you for keeping your new kittens indoors. Perhaps consider an outdoor enclosed "catiary" planted with trees and grass so the cats can have the best of both worlds without harm to themselves.

i cant remeber wat that brand is it controls the odors and sorry about ur cat
baking soda should cut down on the smell.
I dont really understand letting your cats roam freely...in fact the humane society here suggests keeping your cats indoors. I imagine it has much to do with where you live. I live in a large apartment complex in themiddle of the city, I would never let my cats outdoors without me being with them. Why would it be so bad to keep them inside? My cats are safe, happy, loving cats with no problem whatsoever. Unless you consider a longer , healthier life span a problem.

Im sorry, that wasn't directed towards the questioner, but one of the answers here, sort of set me off.

The arm and hammer litter seems to work great for me. I have three cats.
I have found that the scoopable litter, Tidy Cats for multiple cats helps the box be less stinky. The crystal litters work well, too. For kittens, because they're paws are small and tender, I'd choose something with small granules rather than regular clay litter. This will encourage them to use the box.

However, the best way to keep the litter box from being stinky is to change the food you're feeding them. I have found through experience that IAMS dry leaves the litter box less stinky than any other food, premium food or any others. Canned food makes it the stinkiest. I had to go out of town and while I was gone my husband changed the food to whatever cheap food he could get. The house stunk badly. When we changed them back to IAMS dry, the smell went away within one day. Keep in mind that right after one of the cats takes a dump it will smell, so you can get either Febreeze air freshener or X-O to eliminate the smell. I also spray X-O on the litter whenever I clean the box.
They sell something called litterbox freshener at petco. Im a pet sitter and I love the stuff!!! My cats have never had a problem with it either.
baking soda is good. Safe too.
Shake and vac always used to work - Not sure if they still sell the stuff though
I'm very sorry about the loss of your cat and I can understand why you want to keep your new kittens inside. I hate litter boxes and found that the litter that worked best for me is the silicone bead type that you can find in pet stores under several brands. Get the kind that is square-shaped, the round shaped beads roll allover the floor. It is more expensive but can last up to 4 weeks. It has no scent itself (I hate scented litters as much as I hate the smell of cat urine) and it absorbs all of the urine smell very effectively until it really needs to be changed. It is not a clumping style litter. I have one very large cat, so I bought an extra large litter box, use a plastic liner and then put down the absorbent pad that comes with the litter. I use two bags of the litter at a time because my cat is so big and really likes to dig. It does last me the entire 4 weeks. You still have to scoop the poop daily though.

I've found this is the only litter I can actually stand to have around. The box has absolutely no smell unless you go too long on changing it.
bleach. change the litter so it is fresh for your new babies.
Go to petco and get Americas finest...it is made of corn..it work the best it clumps very well and it absorbs the odor...I have 2 cats and I would never but anything else.
So sorry about your loss. I don't blame you for not wanting to let the two little ones out without supervision. We put a little bit of baking soda in with the litter and that helps control the smell. Scoop the litter at least once a day, we scoop ours out multiple times a day and that should help as well.
Start with backing soda. Most cats do not mind it, and it is a natural odor absorber. Also, you can get litter with odor absorbing pellets. I use pine shavings as kitty litter, and have very little odor with 6 indoor cats. I also clean thier boxes twice a week, minimum, and wash the boxes with water and backing soda once a month.

Good luck
buy the pet litter that is for "multiple cats". When I change the litter box I put in some baking soda (just a tad).on the bottom.
Baking Soda
I've tried lots of products, from different litters through to the powder you sprinkle in and deodorising air freshners. In my experience, there is only one thing that really works and that's Catsan litter. It is more expensive than most others but it really works and we get no smells at all from the tray now. Plus, you're not buying any other deodorising products so it's not as expensive as it may seem.
shake and vac
Wood based litter is a good option.
I put my cat tray in a bag, line it with newspaper and then put a scoop of cat litter. My cat will only use it once. I change the newspaper and litter after every use, and if the bag gets holed so it leaks, I renew that after cleaning the tray with disinfectant. And then there is no problem with odour.
I found that using Catsan cat litter was very good at eliminating odours. It is a little more pricey than other cat-litter, but its well worth it. Also sprinkling over shake-n-vac works.

What can I give to my cat who has rheumatoid arthritis?

Answers:
Ask your vet for things called Synova G3. Ithas lots of good stuff for the bones. Its like a chew and they normally take it without a problem. You can also make sure it has some of that stuff in it.
bullet
liquid baby aspirin.
I haven't heard of rheumatoid arthritis in cats. Have you been given that specific diagnosis? If you have an older cat it is most likely osteoarthritis, not the autoimmune response that occurs in rheumatoid arthritis.

My vet approved my giving Rhus toxicodendron to my 22 year old cat at the 6X dosage - one pill at day. It did seem to increase her mobility a good deal. This was six months before the end of her life.

I started taking Rhus (a homeopathic remedy) in January. I take 3 pellets twice a day at 220C dosage and don't have to use any other pain medication now at all. So I am very happy to be free from all allopathic medications.

What can I feed my little kittens if the mother doens't have enough milk?

The mother of 5 kittens isn't producing enough milk for her kittens, I need to know what to do to feed them and what do I feed them. they are 1 month old
Answers:
Four weeks give them some food. She is not producing in order to wein them. Please spay and neuter them.
Get kitten formula from the pet store. Check them daily for the nubby evidence of teeth, pretty soon you can start letting momma show them how to eat mush (make a nice slurry out of rich kitten chow and feed it to mom, the kittens will pick it up, and you can start weaning them over a couple weeks or so).
This is what i did when the mother didnt have enough was i went to petsmart and they have baby kitten milk that comes along with a bottle and you hold to the kitten and feed it to them like the mother would from its nipples and the bottle has a nipple on it so the kitten would feel like its eating from the mom!
You can feed them milk replacer for kittens. You can find it at any pet store or department store with a pet department.

At a month old, you should be able to skip the bottle and put it in a shallow dish (an aluminum pie pan works great). Try introducing it to the kittens on your finger. Get them to taste it and once they are interested, move your hand closer to the dish. Eventually you'll want to hook your fingers IN the formula so that the kittens can lick your fingers and get some of the formula from the dish at the same time.

You can eventually start mixing canned food with the formula to make a soup. Gradually reduce the amount of formula until the kittens are able to eat the canned food alone.
You can find milk replacement normally in the pet section of Wal Mart, or your local pet store. It's usually around $1 a carton. You can also find a small plastic pet bottle that you can cut a hole through the nipple. I have also known people to use a medicine dropper as well. You want to keep the milk at about room temperature, maybe slightly warmer, but not too warm. I would feed them about every 4 hours since they are about a month old, remember their mother's milk is much healthier and contains things the milk replacement doesn't, so focus on getting them to feed off of their mother. But if they are still hungry, you can normally tell, and feed until they are full and go to sleep. Also keep them in a warm place with blankets. Any other questions, let me know.
You will have to start bottle feeding them kitten milk formula. They will soon pick up how to suckle from a bottle.
It is unusual for a mother of 1-month-old kittens to suddenly stop producing enough milk for them. Are you sure this is the case?

If so, you should go to a pet supply store, like PetSmart or PetCo and pick up a special formula and bottle for kittens. While you're there, pick up a good book for tips on hand-feeding kittens or talk to a local veterinarian for advice. At one-month-old and with the mommy cat providing much of the care, it shouldn't be too difficult to assist her in feeding for the next 2 weeks or so. By six weeks, the kittens can be weaned and on a diet of kitten food.
How do you know there isn't enough milk? Milk production is supply and demand. If the kittens are nursing then milk will be produced, unless there is a unknown health issue. Don't bottle feed them unless you want to take over the entire job for mom, because the less they nurse the less milk there is going to be. If you are worried take them to the vet. Also at 4 week they are ready for a little mush. Mix a little water with wet kitten food until it is really runny so they can lap it up. Encourage them to eat it by putting some on your finger and then rub your finger under and along their lips.
When my cat had kittens last year, she also stopped producing alot of milk.
i weaned the kittens on whiskas chicken wet food mixed with luke warm pet milk from supermarkets, they were 4 weeks old.
i mixed enough luke warm milk imto the whiskas chicken wet kitten food. and made it into a runny paste.
some kittens may take after dabbing a bit on their noses. i also gently opened the mouths of the others and put a tiny bit inside their mouths, and a saucer works well for food. my kittens were fully weaned at 5 weeks old.. and also think about litter training them now, as mum wont clean up stinky cat food after masses.
also try feeding a 4 week old kitten 5 to 6 times a day (small amounts) they can also drink fresh water too. kibbles best introduced at 6 weeks of age as it is a strong flavoured food and may cause tummy upsets in younger kittens.
if you dont feel comfortable feeding them food yet, just give them luke warm pet milk availiable in the pet isle at supermarkets.
dont worry they will also still feed off mum, but not as often.
p.s please check the mums kitty boobies often and look for hot swollen hard masses which can be mastytis or milk fever in cats, and will make the babies sick too.
and good luck with the fluffy bundles of joy

What can I feed my cat to help get rid of loose stools?

Answers:
First, take a stool sample to the vet to rule out parasites.

But it may come down to feeding food that agrees with him. Honestly, it's that simple (and difficult!)

I asked a similar question last October, and that's what led me down the path of learning about cat nutrition.

Poor Poppy had loose stool for the first two years of her life. The vet called it "kitten stomach" and said she'd probably grow out of it. Yeah, right. "Sensitive system" food didn't help. The poor girl would poop and run - obviously she found the whole bowel movement thing uncomfortable!

As I said, I asked about something that would firm things up for her because I was frankly getting tired of the weekly butt washings and daily wiping. Somehow I got onto the path of learning about proper nutrition, and long story short, I switched from feeding dry Purina sensitive system and urinary tract health foods to a good quality canned food.

You wouldn't believe the difference! So many things have improved for Poppy. One of the best is weight loss, but now because eliminating is no longer painful, she actually buries her stool now! Like I said, before she would run away like the hounds of hell were after her.

I'm going to give you all my usual links. Some are about obesity which you can of course skip over, but they're all worth reading. Hopefully you'll have as much luck as I did!

(I've made some assumptions here - that this is an ongoing situation and not something as the result of illness or a recent dietary change which can be upsetting to the digestion. If I got it wrong, please add additional details).

EDIT: I should also mention that once you rule out any problems, and perhaps make a diet change, you can also consider adding a probiotic/digestive enzyme supplement. See the last link for more info.
Try dry instead of wet food. Make it isn't getting any dairy, that can cause it. If you have already done that and it hasn't worked, I would take it to the vet.
Boil some rice in chicken broth. When done add a little more chicken broth to it and feed to your cat. That will take care of the initial problem. Then find out why your cat has loose stools. Are you feeding a high quality cat food? Can he have worms? Is he sick? Maybe if this happens too often, maybe you should call the vet.
worm your cat once a month, use dry cat food.. If its a picky eater, just mix very little wet food with dry food...
They shouldn;t be loose as cats poo is always firm,,maybe your cat is sick.. if it;s still like this in 2 more days you should call a vet to check out the cat,,,,,,,,,,
Try a little cottage cheese. When I had my cat, it worked for him. If the cheese doesn't help, you really need to take him to the vet.
Hello, well most cats do have a runnier stool then say dogs..if he has serious problems you can use Kaopectate on cats for one day, bout a 1/4 teaspoon, every 12 hours for ONE DAY only...%26 no canned or pouched foods..even no food for the day is OK .IF things do not improve or get worse..time for a VET..unless you figure out what is causing the problem..like new food or too much canned or pouched food, which we never use for cats any way..cats are all day nibblers. rarely do they ever over eat %26 pig out like dogs...Take Care :)
I was having the same problem problem with my kitten. I switched to Purina One Sensitive Systems. After a few days, he was having a normal BM. It is made with yogurt, so I guess it helped regulate his little tummy.
It would be a good idea to have your cat checked by the vet, including a test of their stool to check for parasites. That means you should take a small sample from the litter box, in a sterile container, such as a baby food jar that has been washed and boiled.

Cats that have an irritable bowel, or sensitivities, often do well on hairball chow because of the added fiber, which usually comes from beet pulp. You do not need to take away their canned, simply replace your present chow with the hairball formula, and then if the cat improves, you might try re-introducing the regular chow into its bowl.

Another trick is to give them a teaspoon of pure pumpkin every day until the stools are firmed. Then taper off to every second day, and then twice a week, just to keep them stable. Make sure it is not canned pie filling. You can freeze pure pumpkin in an ice cube tray and thaw as needed.
NO dry foods or rice! Cats are carnivores and shouldn't get rice. Dry food is not good for cats and is responsible for causing many problems as cats get older. If you have a health food store near you, try to get some acidopholus. That should help

What can I feed a 19yr old cat that doesnt want to eat anything?

Since the cat food recall, i have had to change her food and she doesnt like anything, she will try the new food, maybe eat some and then turn her head, then she wont eat it again, have even tried chicken baby food, which she did eat for a few days and now wont touch! Im running out of ideas.please help.
Answers:
People seem to underestimate the importance of taking an animal to the vet when something isn't right!

Take. Your cat. To. The vet.

If she isn't eating, there might be something wrong. Maybe she got some of that contaminated food before you realized it was being recalled?

Also, 19 years old is near ancient for a cat... she might just be ready to pass.

Go. To. The. Vet.

Not only will the vet be able to tell if there's something wrong, if your cat is just being finicky he'll be able to tell you how to work around that.
try feline caviar.
Canned fish (tuna, mackerel -- whatever is least expensive).

Your cat is over halfway to setting a new record.

There was a woman in England with an ancient cat. The vet did all he could, but the day finally came that he could not help the cat, so the woman requested that the cat be put down.

Afterward, the vet asked how old the cat was.

"If Kitty had lived to her birthday, she would have been THIRTY-FIVE."
by the sounds of it she is really old so try soft food. even milk. u can put water on her old hard food to soften it. in her physical state of being she might have a loose tooth or a tooth ache. so look out for that. fish is soft and it is something mostly every cat enjoys eating. so try those things and if they dont work then just watch her and see what she goes to find and eat on her own because she wont just let herself starve. all animals have it in them to hunt and find food do im sure she will. hope this hepls:)
Old and picky! LOL I'm not real sure have you tried tuna fish or cooked chicken? also get her some vitamins so if you do find something, other than real cat food for her to eat, so she will still have those vitamins she willl need.
Try regular baby food, like Gerber.
That won't hurt them. In fact, cats like that too.

The Purina products weren't on the recall lists and I've been feeding my cats Friskies, wet and dry, and they are just fine.
Maybe tuna or some other kind of fish.
Go to a smaller mom and pop pet store, and get Wellness -- it is incredibly healthy and I have never met a cat to hate it (don't get the turkey flavor though, stick to chicken or fish) All the stuff on the recall was garbage anyway, and bad for cats.
When we were trying to find out what was affecting one of my cats health, the doctor had me feed him Liver baby food. Both of my cats were ecstatic! but did get bored with it. Perhaps you can buy some Liver %26 Chicken baby food and alternately pour it over dry food. This may keep the boredom down. You can find cat food recipes on line since the big recall.
baby food
I agree that maybe you should have her checked out by the vet. If she's not eating, there could be a problem with her health. The vet might also have some suggestions or a food you could try if it turns out nothing is wrong.
Try other flavors of baby food. Turkey. Beef. Ham. Make sure there's no onion in it.

You can try canned tuna for a while. Mine liked the rotisserie chicken from the supermarket. One like white meat. The other dark meat.

Deli meat.

Keep trying other brands of foods. Even the cheap bad for her ones. The important thing is to just keep her eating.

Maybe you have to find the things she will eat and keep switching them up.
When I was a kid, our cat who was 17 yrs. old decided that all he would eat was raw chicken livers. My Mom was frying some liver and gizzards for Dad and the cat jumped on the counter, stole one of the raw chicken livers and took it to his favorite spot to eat it. After that, he wouldn't eat anything else. We took him to the Vet after a couple of days without eating cuz we thought the raw meat had made him sick. The Vet said to give him raw chicken liver if that's what he wants.it won't hurt him.

What can I do with my cat?

We've got this cat, she's lovely and we've had her for about three years. My problem is this, we've just bought a place at the seaside and are there all the time at weekends and when the kids are on holiday. Running two homes is costing us a fortune and I can't afford expensive cattery fees. My mum is poorly and, even though she would, I don't want to keep relying on her to feed the cat. What can I do. Can the vet give her something to help her on the long 300 mile journey? Should I get rid of my cat? I need advice please.
Answers:
I don't think you need to get rid of the cat as long as you are home with her the majority of the time. A weekend at home, by herself, is fine. There are large self-despensing food and water containers that you can buy where all you have to do is fill it all the way up and as she eats/ drinks, it will refill itself. And you can set out an extra litter box as well so she has clean litter. I don't think you should cart her back and forth from home to home as cats don't like drastic change. It would only upset her. If you don't think you're spending as much time at home, then perhaps it is time to rehome your cat. Keep the cat's happiness in mind. If she is alone often, perhaps you should rehome her as cats are social. Otherwise, the large self-refilling food/water jugs are a great idea.
Leave out some dry cat food for her on the weekends. We do that with ours when we leave for a few days and they always have a little bit of food left so we know they didn't go hungry at all. Then on the longer weekends (holidays) ask a friend or neighbor you trust if they don't mind putting some food out for her.

I wouldn't want to bring the cat on the 300 mile road trip. That may stress out the cat more than leaving her home alone for a few days.

What can I do with a litter of kittens I found in my back yard?

My dog was out running around our back yard this morning and uncovered an old pile of wood up against our fence and underneath the wood was a litter of kittens probably 4 or 5 kittens and one adult cat. We already have one inside kitty and dog and don't want to add 5 more. What can we do? I refuse to take them to animal control cause the one in my area has a VERY high kill rate. Does any one know a No kill rescue in the Metro Atlanta area that takes in stay cats from residental homes?
Answers:
CAT-SNIP in Atlanta (they are No-Kill) also rescues kitties.

http://atlantaanimalalliance.com/aaa/cat...

They are associated with the Atlanta Animal Alliance
http://atlantaanimalalliance.com/aaa/ind...

Please get in touch with them.

Can you pick up the mama cat or does she run from you??Your Mama may be feral and might need to be Humanely trapped by someone who is associated with this rescue group in your area.

Thank you for caring for these kitties!!

Maybe if you have some time, you culd help out these organizations in your area who do SO MUCH to help these cats and many more like them (almost all of them NOT spayed or nuetered...!) who have been abandoned and left to fend for themselves and reproduce.
call the a.p.l wear you live or keep them do you have friends give some to them.
Found this on the internet:

FurKids No Kill Cat Rescue -- it's in Atlanta. Phone Number: 770.613.0009

Thanks for caring for this mother and her babies!
Maybe you can give the kittens to one of your neighbours.
Let the kittens be adopted.
call your vet up and ask them if the know or will take them.some vets have pets to adopt out in there office but the best thing to do is take them in they got to stay with there mom for 8 weeks to Finnish feeding make them a little home and cover it so rain doesn't get them wet and sick but you can't separate them yet.Maybe you have a pet smart in your town.ask your vet what you can do and you don't want to call any place that will kill them.Oh and while your out there give mom some food she will need it to make milk don't give any cats milk
Aww. How sweet! If I were you, I would allow the cat to rear her kittens in your garden. I am sure that after a few days, she will move them of her own accord anyway, as most cats would not find an area that houses a dog a great place to bring up her kittens.
I can bet that in a couple of days you will find that she has moved them to a safer area, especially now that she knows her hiding place has been uncovered.
If that's not the case, or you want rid of them NOW, then the best thing to do would be to call all the local cat sanctuaries and ask them if they would take the kittens. However, I don't think this is a particularly nice thing to do. After all, the cat probably belongs to a neighbour of yours, who has been looking forward to her cat having the kittens, and is now very worried about where her heavily pregnant cat has disappeared to.
It may be an idea to print out some leaftets detailing what has happened and a description of the cat, and then post them around your neighbourhood with your number. I can bet you would make someone extremely relieved and happy. It should be their decision to either keep the kittens, sell them, or give them to a shelter.
If there is no contact after a few days, and the cats are still there, THEN you should give them to a home.
Do you not have the RSPCA in America? If you do, then they are the best people to call and ask for advice, and most definitely wouldn't kill the kittens.

Good luck!
good luck
I've heard from my local shelter in Covington that Petsmart adopts many animals from shelters for adoption. I'm sure that Petco will too. I'd try to see if there are some smaller Pet stores (I call them mom %26 pop stores) to see if they can take the kittens. I'd check with neighbors first to see if the cats have a home. The woodpile was probably the safest outside place she could find to have her babies. FurKids is in Atlanta too. Their # is 770-613-0009. Good luck!
