What is Catnip?

Answers:
It is a member of the mint family that cats are naturally attracted to. When eaten it causes them to become more frisky and playful.
its a 'treat' you give to cats. it is, in some ways, like a drug for them, but it doesnt harm them in any way.
It's just an herb that some (but not all) cats go crazy over. Put it in their toys and if your cat likes it, he will sniff it and roll in it and act like a kitten again for a few minutes. We always know when Cleo has gotten into the catnip because she gets "crazy eyes"!
Like weed for cats I've heard lol. It's just like a treat something that cats are fond of and it's often use for training, added playful mood, or just because. Doesn't hurt them.
It's just an herb that most cats get high from. Doesn't work that way for people. Some cats could care less about my cats love it. The fresher it is the better. It makes them very happy;^)
An herb. Like parsley.
when you get bit thats a cat nipping you.
It is an herb. It has an odd smell to it too. Manufactuers of cat scratchers put it into the carpet fibers to attract your cats to the scratching post instead of your sofa. Your cats will see it as a treat. Dont give them too much though, it can make them ill. Just a tiny sprinkle or a pinch of catnip will do. You can purchase it in a flaky form at Retailers in the pet isle
It's a plant for cats and it makes them go crazy it is like crack for kitties. They sorta look like clovers but when crushed you can put it in toys and they go crazy over it tossing it everywhere etc.
Yeah, but do they get the munchies and then eat all your peanut butter?
Catnip is a herb from the mint family, it smells to cats like pheromones (sex hormones) so most cats love it. It will make the cat play full and excited, some times to the extreme of scratching or baiting u in play.
It can also be used in cocking.
I have read this literature but i have not been brave enough to tray it on my self so I quot: "If smoked it produces a mild feeling of euphoria"
Catnip comes from Nepeta plants. The leaves are often chopped and crushed and resembles oregano. Catnip is either put inside cat toys or can be sprinkled on or near your cat. When eaten or in contact with your animal, it will react with oils in their skin and can cause a brief stimulating, drug-like effect; however it is safe and legal. Often times cats will eat it, roll in it, and rub on it as it can be absorbed into the skin. It has no effect on humans.

Cats that eat catnip or are exposed to it can become hyper, euphoric, extremely playful, and a bit nutty. The effects will last from a few minutes to about a half an hour, and are not perminant or damaging in any way. Some have compared it to legal marajuana for animals, although that is not the case.

This website explains all about catnip.
This website explains how it works:
http://www.howstuffworks.com/question303...
Hope this helps explain it.
Catnip is an all natural product.
In fact catnip (Nepata cataria) is a plant. It's a perennial herb from the mint family that grows naturally.
Catnip plants originated from the Mediterranean, but is now found growing through out North America.
It is likely that catnip is growing somewhere on your block and is probably viewed as a weed by some of your neighbors. Some of your neighbors, but not all of them. Catnip is grown by many people for human use as a soothing pleasant tea to relieve upset stomachs, hysteria, nervousness, and headaches. It is used for cooking, potpourri, soap-making, candle-making, and aromatics.
And of course lets not forget most cats absolutely adore catnip
Part of the mint family, it's almost like a drug for cats. Has a pseudosexual response for a while then the cat ignores it for a while, only to come back and go thorugh it all again.
Even lions react to it. Kittens under 3 months old are immune to it, and 10% - 30% of adults do not have any response to it.

Don't confuse True Catnip with true catmint and looks a bit different. All in all there are 250 in the species group
Please see this link, it shows the difference very well:
http://fay.iniminimo.com/herbs.html...

Valerian root a herb with effects very similar to catnip and generally makes cats a bit nuts. It is however not as readily available as catnip and perhaps a bit more potent than catnip.

mikecujosdad, some friends of mine tried that - it's only in very large quantities that that apparently happens, and the illness you feel afterwards was apparently simply not worth the effort, LOL.

What is an effective cleaning solution / neutralizer for cat urine in carpet or fabric? (Yuck!!)?

Answers:
It's the smell of decaying fatty deposits in cat urine that makes it smell so bad.

You can purchase enzymatic cleaning products from the vets or pet supply shops. A home remedy that your can try is to mix 10% biological (enzymatic) washing powder with 90% warm water to clean the area. Use a nail brush to ensure you get right into the fibres of the fabric. Then rinse thoroughly with cold water and wipe dry. Next, using a plant mister lightly spray the area with a low grade alcohol or surgical spirit. Allow the area to dry thoroughly or you can use a hair-drier to speed things up. I'd recommend testing this on a small area first to ensure it doesn't remove the colour from the carpet or fabric of the affected area. Dependent upon how strong the smell is, you may need to repeat this cleaning method.

Cat urine contains ammonia, so whatever you do, don't use bleach or any products containing ammonia to clean the area.
Nature's Miracle...

(i am currently studying vet. med, and that is one that my professors swear by!)
vinegar and water in a spray bottle. after you clean it with a regular cleaner like simple solution. it really helps with the smell.
Natures Miracle
available at most pet stores
Look for a product called Urine-Off you can get from vets or on-line. It is the only thing I've ever found that actually works. I know some people swear by Nature's Miracle but it's never quite cut it for me. Urine-off is a little more expensive but it really gets the smell 100% gone.
I think there is a product called Urine B Gone that is made just for that, I believe you can get it a drugstores and supermarkets.

What is an alfa cat and what kind of behavior do these cats posses?

Answers:
an ALPHA(not alfa cat is the cat who is in charge of all the other cats, kinda of like the leader in a wolf pack, an alpha cat tends to be very dominant to the other cats(licking the top of the head, never chowing his belly to other cats etc.) I have a cat who's alpha in out group and he takes full charge, breaking up fights amoung other cats and starting some himself(like when he feels its his turn to sit in the window, I wouldn't worry about it, alpha cats are not dif. then subordinate cats.
fix him!
a leader, strong and stubborn
In any group of animals (including animals and humans together) there will be someone who is dominant. With two cats one will always be more dominant, no matter how slightly. They are the 'leader' of the group and take control over the rest, kinda like guiding them. They will keep the others in check generally, they'll do things first, they'll dominate and discipline the rest.
My alpha male is the cat the others come to to have their heads licked. He does not lick heads!
Wow I actually learned something tonite I never knew this existed.

What is age is appropriate for clipping a kittens nails?

My kitten franki is two months old and his nails are like needles and I have scratches allllll over me. Is it safe to clip them I do my 1 yr old cat so I have done it before
Answers:
Yes it is safe to clip his nails at that age. when i first got my 2 kittens they were about 2 months old and there nails sharp as razors. I went to the store and bought a cat nail clipper and took very little off. Also if you start this young when they are adult cats it will be a little bit more easier to do it. and when i got my third kitten a few month later i started doing the same thing so he was use to it as well by the time he was an adult out of all three of my cats 2 of them stay still like they are getting a "manicure" and the other one squirms a little but not too much. Well I hope this helps you out.
Yes. You can clip the nails. Just be very careful when you do it as it may be harder to see the quick (the pink part inside the nail that will bleed if cut). Actually this may make if easier for you in the future, as the cat will get used to it now.

Use a towel to hold him and have a second person clip them.
4 m you can,t do by your self take to the grooming there are many high school they do for cheap and only the teacher do it
I started all of my cats the minute they first stabbed me with those little baby daggers! As early as 6 weeks on some.

Just make sure, for the health of the cats claws, that you are only cutting off the pointy tip of the nail and no farther back than just the tip.

Also, on baby nails I would use regular SHARP new human clippers because they work better than large pet claw clippers.

Good Luck!
I started clipping my kitten's claws at about 8 weeks... a lot of people say to wait longer because they're still growing, but the fact is, they're always growing! Just make sure they are long enough that you can clip them without nicking the quick and causing them to bleed. When you start when they are young, they become more accustomed to it and it isn't as difficult in the future. Here's a website that might be able to help you with the process: http://www.caws.org/catclaws.html...

Good luck!

What is a smell that cats hate and i love?

Answers:
CITRUS AND MINT

all cats hate it!
citrus (orange) oils
Well I don't know what kind of smells you love, but cats, for the most part, really don't like the smell of citrus.
cats hate citrus scents. If you like citrus scents, then you're good to go!
dont know what you like,or what your trying to do, but hot sauce has worked for me
fried cat on a stick burned by cigarettes. Can you imagine, cigarettes
Some say citrus, but, every cat I've ever owned hated the smell of mint. Dogs seem to love the smell of mint ... but my cats take off in the other direction, when they smell mint.
my cats hate the smell of nail polish and nail polish remover

My grandkids got a dog from a neighboring town and named the dog that - Preston. It fits him. Have you been someplace on vacation that you really, really liked? Or read a book that had a character you were partial to? It's nice to name her something that is very special to you. Perhaps after a grandmother or someone you love. What is a good name for my baby kitten?

9 months old. Male. %26 He's White %26 Gray.
Answers:
Watch to see what his personality is like. If you do this a name will just come to you that will fit your kitten. I did this with both my little guys. I have a 5 month old orange tabby so I named him Tigger right off the bat. I found out 2 days later that Tigger did not fit him at all, and he wasn't responding to it. I watched him for the day and renamed him Apollo. When he jumps he goes about 5 feet at a time with all 4 paws out. To me that name fits him way better then Tigger. Congrats on the kitten.

Well, normally I have the same problem, but after a week or two the cats personality comes out and it's SO MUCH EASIER to pick a name after you get to know it:)
My tuxedo cat's name is Scooby. Mainly because he acts like a dog but my roommate named him.
Sylvester, Moo (like a cow), Batz Maru (A Sanrio character), Penguin.

The Dari word for cat is "Peshak" and I always thought that would make a good name for a cat.
I have a black and white cat who was my mother-in-laws. She is named Panda because her face markings make her look like a Panda Bear. My other cat got his name D.C. which is short for Darn Cat, because he liked to attack people when he was a kitten and we were always saying "Darn Cat". I would look at his personality and go with a name that suits it.
Just to be different name it in association to when you got the cat. My first cat I got on valentine's day so I named her valentina. My other cat was a Christmas present so I named her Christina.

What is a good lie to tell my friend?

my "friend" dumped a cat on me years ago even though I said I don't want one. so after many years I dropped off the cat at a humane center. I need a good lie to explain what happened to the cat he dumped on me. What would be a good lie?
Answers:
it ran away..it died...it got out and you haven't seen it for a few days but left a bowl of food out "hoping" it will come back..*haha* simple stuff nothing crazy like aliens came to do studies on way humans love cats and you're hoping to get the results back...that's not to believable lol, but if you ever get some reports let me know right now I'm off once again to clean up cat hair balls *BLEK*
be honest... just say you couldn't love the cat the way the cat needed and you wanted it to have a better life than you were giving it...

lying is never good
There is no such thing as a "good lie". That's like saying that there is an "honest lawyer". It's an oxymoron.

If you had reason for dropping the cat off at the humane center, then tell this person why you felt that you needed to do that. If your friend catches you in a lie, then you lose the friend. Do you normally lie to friends? OR better yet, do you want your friends to be dishonest and lie to you? Think it over.

Do the right thing...tell the truth.
the truth, you told him you didnt want the cat in the first place. After he "dumped" the cat on you, it became your responsibility to do as you please, if you wanted to get rid of it, it was your choice to do so. After so many years of being more responsible than he, he has no right to ask where the cat is.
Well maybe your friend didn't really register in their brain that you didn't want a cat. Lies are bad. Meany.
NO lie's a good lie the truth is always your best option... lying will bite you in the butt
Just tell them the truth. The humane society should take the pet. Only you will know that you didn't tell them the truth if you lie.
Obviously your "friend" wasn't a friend or you wouldn't have ended up with a cat. The best is to just tell your "friend" that you took it to the animal shelter because you couldn't take care of it anymore.
Tell your "friend" you ate his cat. See what he says. I am sure the needle was a better death than what your "friend" had for the cat. You did the best that you could. I feel sorry for your "friend".
u should tell him the truth, maybe he can find him back. good luck.
you could say it died
You need to be honest. Tell him that you were not able to properly care for the animal and took it to the shelter where it could get a home.

What is a good kind of flea shampoo for cats?

We have used the Hartz stuff from Walmart and it is crap. Any other suggestions? Thanks
Answers:
http://www.take1products.com It's safe and all natural. Lavender a natural insect repellent, also very calming.
Touch of Mink pet shampoo

It's by mail order btw
it works great too
The vet can give your cats a dip. The dips work great or you can use Dawn dish soap.
wash the cat with baby shampoo and then go get advatage from your vet. that way she's clean and flealess.
well I don't know what the name of the brand is but I do know where they sell it at Petco or PetSmart just have the workers what is the best flea shampoo they have that what I said and it work
Purina makes a shampoo that really works for fleas, and it's safe to use on dogs, puppies, cats, kittens and livestock as well. It's a good all around shampoo, safe and effective. I used to get it at the local feed store for about $8 a quart. As far as I can remember, I think it's just called Purina Animal Shampoo. I'll try to find a link and edit my post.

:)
Never ever use a flea shampoo on your cat.

Use a product like Frontline where you rub a measured amount between the shoulder blades ( inaccessible to the cat). It will work for indoor and outdoor cats.

Now you don't have to subject your cat to a chemical wash that he will ingest when grooming.

What is a good cat repellent?

Answers:
Actually, a good ol' southern repelent is made of up of common household items.
If the cat is climbing on your vehicle or in an area you don't want it to be, try mixing vinegar and pepper together and putting it in the spot you don't want the cat to be.
It will disappear very quickly.
a big dog.
Depends. To keep them off furniture, a squirt bottle with water. To keep them from areas, moth balls %26 SSS scat cat.
Visit: www.drsfosterandsmith.com They have lovely products and it helps A LOT. The products are really useful, and they have a large section dedicated to cats and some are repellents *wink, wink*

water gun, red pepper, and a big dog too
poison..lol
Give your the neighbor down the street a female cat as a gift. Make sure it's in heat.
a dog or pellet gun
a broom and some shoes clap your shoes together and
sweep the floor with the cat but dont knock the dust off
the kitty it might get mad and scratch you then you'll
scream if that happens you might attract a dog and
the dog will try to bite the kitty and the kitty will want
to make a friend and then it will it will bring more cats
and you wont get to spend money on a cute little mouse
and it will attract real rodents like rats and possumes
then it could bring diseases like rabies and asthma
from the unprotected or sightly food or trash and
then if the floor is wood you'll have a serious roach
problem they'll be there for months and it'll attract
spiders and you'll have so many animals and insects
that you'll need a dog to keep good care of your
mouse
BB or pellet gun. "Soft Air" gun might work at close ranges.

What id name of The Hound of Hell?

Answers:
KERBEROS (or Cerberus) was the gigantic hound which guarded the gates of Haides. He was posted to prevent ghosts of the dead from leaving the underworld. Kerberos was described as a three-headed dog with a serpent's tail, a mane of snakes, and a lion's claws. Some say he had fifty heads, though this number might have included the heads of his serpentine mane.
cerberus is the many headed dog that gaurds the underworld.
She's called Anne and she lives in Henfield.

What I can do with my cat?

My cat she wants a boyfriend and she niarrrrrs all the time. But the worst is that she pees almost everywhere!Helllllpppppp mmmmmeeeeee
Answers:
Get her fixed! Or that boyfriend, if you can truly care for the kittens! Make sure he's truly committed to the relationship, and isn't just seeing your moaning lil' puss as another conquest. Also ask him if he has a steady job, any past relationships, and would be an attentive father.

Failing all that, get her a diaper and a little kitty vibrator.
get her a male cat cuz thats crazy but take her to the vet so that she can get spayed if you dont want to keep going through that okay
First of all get the cat fixed. The world does not need more unwanted kittens ending up in shelters. She does not need a boyfriend, and the "niarring" will stop if you get her fixed.

If she is peeing everywhere, make sure that the litter box is clean. Sometimes if the litter box is not clean, the cat refuses to go in it. If the peeing persists, she may have a bladder infection. A trip to the vet may be necessary.
WELL.....WE CATS ALWAYS WANT TO PLAY..JUST WALK HER FIRST THING IN THE MORNING LIKE A DOG...promise it will work
spay her do for love
she needs to be spayed
Please do the right thing and have your cat spayed by a vet. There are usually Banfield Vets inside PetsMart stores and they offer a yearly plan for immunizations and checkups.
She is in heat and if you want her to have kittens then find a male cat, or just let her out if she is an out door cat. Otherwise when her heat period is over take her to a vet and get her neutered. Problem solved, get her neutered or pregnant.
Have her spayed, that should solve all your problems!
if shes 6 months old shes ready to be a mom
so if you dont want to be a kitten dad then a trip to the vet might be the solution

shes only being a kitty
Get her fixed!!!

What household remedy can I use for keeping cats frm clawing furniture?

Answers:
Aluminium Foil. Cats hate how it feels on their feet.

A squirt gun. Squirt her when she goes to claw. BUT!! You do have to provide her something to claw.

There are "stay away" sprays. "Off" sprays and other things at pet stores.
declaw them or buy them a scratching post either works
Its hard to do this as this is a natural reaction for cats. best thing you can do is clip their nails every so often, don't clip them to short where they can bleed though.
Don't declaw, let me tell you how easily you can avoid that.

A tall, sturdy and heavy scratching post sprinkled occasionally with catnip is the favored alternative. Some cats are partial to sisal doormats.
When selecting furniture, a closely woven fabric is the best. Cats find this type of fabric difficult to pierce with their claws.
When your cat begins to scratch on a piece of furniture, give him a firm warning such as "No, Kitty!" and then give him a quick squirt from a mister or water pistol. This should discourage him. Then call him to his scratching post with a food treat and praise him when he comes and uses the post. This may have to be done over and over until he understands.
If accustomed to the procedure, cats will tolerate having the curved part of their claws clipped regularly. Consult your veterinarian for instructions.
Until your cat learns that only the scratching posts (it's recommended that you have several), are for scratching, cover his favorite furniture scratching areas with either one or a combination of aluminum foil, a loosely woven fabric, double-sided tape, or blown up balloons taped to the furniture.
When playing with a kitten or cat NEVER use your hand or arms in play. This teaches him that people are toys and he may scratch simply in play. Each time your cat scratches you, give him a loud "OUCH" and leave the room. One of the most effective punishments for a cat is being ignored.

If you catch the cat in the act of scratching in the undesired spot, even with the aversives in place, correct the cat with a sound; hissing, a quick 鈥榓h!鈥? but nothing that she can interpret as punishing sounds associated with your voice. This is why we don鈥檛 use the cat鈥檚 name during the correction - only when he performs an action we approve of; his name is then only used in conjunction with praise. Especially at first, it鈥檚 important to follow the correction with a trip to the post, where the cat has an opportunity to earn praise and again make positive connections with the experience of scratching in the right place. After the correction, the carrying over to the right place shouldn鈥檛 have a punishing feel to it - don't scoop the cat off the ground in a sudden motion, or continue after the correction sound with further disapproving tones. Be patient; incorporating this new behavior into his routine may take a few months without having any 鈥榮lips鈥?

Remember that an important part of scratching is the cat's desire to mark a territory, so a scratching post should be in an area that's used by the family, not hidden in a back corner. After a time you can move the post away to the periphery of the room, but you'll need to do this gradually.

Initially, put the post where your cat goes to scratch. This may be by a sofa, a chair or wherever Kitty has chosen as her territory, and you may need more than one post to cover her favorite spots. Security is a major factor in making the post appealing to your cat. If it topples or shakes, she won't use it.

Encourage Kitty to use her post with clever enticements. Feed her and play with her by the post. Rub dried catnip leaves or powder into it. Make all the associations with the post pleasurable. Reward her with a favorite treat when she uses it. Have her chase a string or a toy around the post or attach toys to it, which will result in her digging her claws into it. Eventually she will learn to love it and regard it as her own. It's also a good idea to put a post where Kitty sleeps. Cats like to scratch when they awaken, especially in the morning and the middle of the night. If space permits, a scratching post in every room of the house is a cat's delight. The most important place is the area of the house in which you and Kitty spend the most time.

If she starts to scratch an inappropriate object, immediately place her in front of her scratching post and begin petting her. Some cats will begin kneading when petted, thus digging their claws into the desired surface and establishing this as a fine place to scratch.

See, no declawing needed.
It's called a scratching post...
Get stick on claw covers you can get them from any pet shop they are like false finger nails, declawing is cruel
Use feliway spray!

What Household Items Could I Feed A Cat-Specifically (Revised)?

There is a cat that comes around my house once and a while and it continually grows thinner. My dad is extremely paranoid about having pets, except for fish (ugh), and thus he would never let me keep it or feed it. I can't really drive to ShopRite and buy cat food, because first of all I cant drive and second where would I put it? I understand that if I feed it, it would continue to come back to my house and kind of become "my pet". If I somehow befriend it and pet it would I catch a disease? Anything deadly? And what would be the symptoms?
Answers:
canned chicken would work, and as for catching diseases there aren't any I know of that you could catch from just petting the cat. A cat with rabies would have to bite you , and toxoplasmosis , you would have to come in contact with its feces ( I am not saying all stray cats have rabies or toxoplasmosis)
The cat obviously has nowhere else to go, get a friend to buy the catfood for you, and feed it, that way your dad has to realise that the cat is no danger, and one trip to the vet and the kitty can be yours, get the shots done (tell your dad you'll do extra chores and stuff) and get the cat fixed. Your dad's paranoia should not be your problem, see if you can get your mom in on this one.
you can feed it tuna, ham/turkey slices, any kind of fish, milk, and it will need water.because its a stray it will probably not trust you and it will take some time before you can actually pet it without it running away or hissing at you. youre not going to catch a deadly disease from it.
You are not very likely to get a disease from petting a cat. If it has fleas, you may get a flea bite. You can feed cats any kind of meas (except pork). Also, they love canned chicken, canned tuna, hot dogs, hamburger, cheese, cottage cheese, (no milk, it could make it sick), Most meat is pretty good for a cat. If this cat is getting nothing, then anything you feed it will make it feel better. Maybe just a little of your leftover supper. Cats love carrots and pumpkin pie filling. (do not feed grapes, they could make her sick). Cats also love butter. Maybe if you have mashed potatoes for supper, put a little extra butter on there when they are hot and save some for the kitty.
Have someone buy you a bag of dry catfood. Put a pile of it somewhere where your dad doesn't go, like in a bowl behind a bush.

Unfortunately, he is probably growing thinner because he has worms. Those need to be cured or he could starve to death, even though he is eating, because the worms will eat what he eats.

You won't catch any diseases from petting the cat. He is probably starved for attention and loves that petting from you. Just wash your hands after, the same as handling any pet.
Hi

In the meantime, you can feed it meats like chicken, turkey, fish ect. No veggies or rice or pasta. You cannot get a disease from a cat unless it was rabid and that is extremely rare and you would have known by seeing it anyway.
It does eventually need cat food though.
Good for you for caring. I hope you can work something out.
Ken
we have tried chicken tenders,,,any thing chicken should be fine,,,just make sure it is boneless,,,and small pieces.

What Household Items Can A Cat Eat?-Specifically?

There is a black and white cat that sometimes comes by my house. It's seemingly hungry and it seems to grow thinner with each visit. My dad is a bit paranoid about animals except fish -.-", so I cant really just walk right on to ShopRite and buy a can of cat food for it. I was wondering what household items I could possibly feed it, and how much milk is safe for it to drink. Oh and how do I tell if it's a guy or girl??
Answers:
call your local animal control.

if this cat is not immunised and you start feeding it, it will not go away and you are risking the health of all other cats and dogs in the area - it could be carrying a number of infectious diseases.
.
tinned tuna and salmon, chicken (cooked and raw), beef (cooked and raw). If it is starving it will eat anything.
Many Cats are lactose intolerant, so if you want to give it milk, maybe dilute it with some water.
Dontl give it milk, just water. If you start to feed it, you're likely to have a dozen cats hanging around. Chicken is a good food for them, boiled or baked is by far better than fried. A good dry cat food would be the best thing for it though.
Do you have any tuna? It seems to be a feline favorite. And I give my cat milk from time to time, perhaps once a week or every other week.
It's really not good to feed a cat "household" items. Cats need to have cat food which is specifically formulated for them. Human food, canned or cooked, does not contain taurine which is absolutely essential for the cat's health and well-being. So most things you would eat are no-no's for the cat.

When you prepare a chicken for the household if you can chop up a chicken wing into three pieces or so, give the liver, heart and gizzard from the chicken to the cat that is one of the most nutritional meals it could have - all this must be RAW of course so the taurine is not destroyed. There is bone, lean muscle meat and skin in the wing, the heart and gizzard are great sources for taurine. So it is a natural and balanced meal for the cat. Cow's milk is not of much nutritional value to the cat and you might give a small amount.

If you can see testicles on the cat it is, of course, male and if you don't see any it is female.
tuna (not more than once a week), beef, chicken cats are canivorous so any meat products will do...good luck possibly if you can buy it a bag of cat food also...that way you can put out a dish of food for the poor kitty
It may have worms. Don't feed it cow's milk it will most likely get an upset tummy from that.
If I were you, I'd feed it without my dad knowing, if it's getting thinner it means it's not ever getting fed.
Keep in mind that if you feed this cat, it will attach itself to your house and in effect become "your" cat. If your dad is paranoid about animals, then that might cause a problem. I would recomend finding a no-kill shelter in the area (one that doesn't euthanize %26lt;sp>) and seeing if they have space for it.
TALK TO YOUR DAD UNTIL YOU WEAR HIM DOWN AND ADOPT THE POOR CAT. Offer to do extra chores, or study more, or whatever it takes. The cat needs to go for a vet check up and shots and dewormed. You'll need to get a carry case to put him in, and call around to compare vets. good luck P.S. why can't you buy a bag of dry food ($2) at shoprite and hide it in the house?

What helps cure cat dandruff?

My cat's skin is dry and I was wondering if fish oil in her food would help or some type of spray I could buy?
Answers:
A high-quality canned food and regular brushing should make a big difference. I started my cats on Wellness a few years ago, and their coats improved dramatically.
Selecting a good commercial pet food:
http://www.catinfo.org/commercialcannedf...
http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?ac...

If your cat is older (8+ years) see a vet for a checkup and 'senior' or 'geriatric' blood tests, to make sure your cat is healthy - sometimes health issues can cause dry skin %26 dandruff.

If your cat is young and don't see a change with good food %26 brushing, a vet checkup may be in order - there are some tiny parasites that can cause dandruff. http://www.dvmnewsmagazine.com/dvm/artic...
Fish oil is a very good addition to your cat's food. You may also try changing her food completely. A bad coat can be a sign of low nutrition. Recently, I started giving a cat (who can't eat Innova EVO because of allergies) a Wellness salmon based food. Amazingly, it smells really good and has a lot of fish oil in the kibble itself.
my cat has dandruff to and the fish oil will help it might take some time but it will
Try using a different shampoo when you bath them. Or go to your vet to see if it's poor nutrtion.

What happens to cats if they don't get adopted?

I wanna know what happens when they don't get adopted. My step-dad made us put my cats in there and I wanna make sure that their safe.
love josie
Answers:
If you put your cat in a shelter ran by the county, those shelters are pro-euthanasia shelters. But don't worry; many shelters don't euthanize unless there is probable cause: they are unadoptable because they are too sick or too mean. So it is very likely that your cats will be adopted out. Also, I work at a no-kill animal rescue and we pull cats from the shelter that are nice cats. There are many like organizations that will take cats from local shelters and try and adopt them out. At our rescue, and rescues like us, we will take care of the animal for the duration of their life span should they not get adopted. I'm sorry your step-dad make you give up your cats. But you should have hope that they will be adopted or taken by a no-kill rescue for adoption.
they get destroyed :-(
If they are not a no-kill shelter, they will be euthanized after a certain period of time.
it depends on where they were put...some shelters are no kill shelters which means the animals will stay as long as they need to untill they find a home. Other shelters do i fact euthanize animals, it is hard to say this is ok but it is hard to find another way as there are SOO many animals in this world, but they usuallly will keep an animal for 7 days...
Cats and dogs that are not adopted within 7 days are killed.
The good adoption centers keep them there.
they will kill them... =( (sniff sniff) ='(
if someone doesn't adopt them sometimes if one of the workers get attached to them they will take them home themselves, or they will just stay at the center that you took them too and i hope that they do get adopted into a nice loving family.
Unless you sent them to a no-kill shelter they are usually killed within 2 weeks, due to an abundance of cats being sent to shelters approx 90-95% of cats sent there are put down. Sorry but that is the truth.

It sounds like your stepfather is a jerk. If he claims it is because of allergies he should have tried Claritin (I'm alergic and have 3 cats without any problems). If you ask me anyone who forces someone to give up a pet shows no loyalty or respect towards the people and/or animals they live with.
No-kill shelter = The animal will stay there for as long as it takes to get adopted. My male cat was at one for 7 months before I adopted him. The only exception would be if the animal is terminally ill and is suffering, or if it becomes extremely hostile and/or aggressive and is a danger to other animals or people.

Kill shelter = They each have their own rules and predetermined times regarding how long an animal will stay. Once that time is up, they are euthanized for space. Too many cats and dogs in this world, and not enough homes. It's horribly sad, but in my opinion, much more humane than letting them starve and scrape by on the streets.

I believe most shelters at this time are kill shelters, but a large number are converting to no-kill.
Josie, it depends on the shelter that the cats were taken to. Some places keep pets as long as they need to find homes for them, but I'm afraid not all shelters can do that. They get so many cats and dogs that sometimes the pets have to be put to sleep. (They hate doing it by the way...)

If your kitties are sweet and friendly, they'll probably be adopted pretty quickly though. :-) You might be able to help your cats by posting a message on www.craigslist.com in your city and ask people to go to the shelter and adopt them. Make sure you include the cats' names, a detailed description of what they look like, and the name of the shelter they are at. I'm sorry that you weren't able to keep them.
Most places put them to sleep
well some places put them to sleep thats what I know but yeah if Nobody will adopted the cats or whatever then they will be put to sleep
Well,if they are a no-kill shelter, then they will certainly not kill the cat,but wait until it gets adopted. They might begin to advertise the cat more often,so people will be attempted to adopt it.On the other hand,I am not sure what they will do to it.

What happens if you feed adult cat iams kitten food?

my friend is feeding her cat thats already fully grown ragdoll iams kitten food is this ok?

what bad things could be expected to happen such as illness or malnutrition
Answers:
Nothing bad can happen. Ragdolls actually tend to mature slowly, but are very big! Even if he looks full grown, he may be only 4-5 months old. Kitten food is meant for kittens to age 1 year. (Also nursing moms or any age, for better nutrition.)
Mainly the calories are too high %26 the cat will get fat. Is the cat over a year old or does she just look grown?
I'm not sure about illnesses but it will probably cause the cat to get fatter since kitten food contains more calories overall because kittens are growing.
not a problem...the formulas are very similar. There is more fat content in kitten food and slightly more protein...other than that they are basically the same
I had fed my grown cat iams kitten food, granted only for 2 weeks, as I bought the wrong bag by mistake. I never noticed any adverse changes in him or his behavior.
Just like human babies the kittens require more fat in their diet. All that will happen is the cat will get fatter!!
The main thing is that the cat is probably going to put on weight; both puppy and kitten food have substantially more calories than their adult counterparts.
I don't think anything will really happen it just probably is not getting everything that it needs that it would get in the adult cat food.I think maybe you should just talk to your friend.I feel that there is the adult cat food and the kitten food for diffrent reason, just like a newborn baby you don't give them milk you give them formula.
There is nothing wrong with that.
Kitten food has only slightly more calories and protein in the diet. The only real difference is in the fact that they are more digestible since kitten stomachs are more sensitive.
So the cat will not be malnourished at all.
Secondly some brands of catfood may be fed to both kitten or adults (but they recommend a particular amount to be fed to the different age groups to ensure the cats remain healthy) so it's really no cause for concern.
Finally, cats like ragolls and maine coons are slow maturing cats. They take about 3 - 4 years to reach their adult size. You did not mention how old the kitten was.
So that 'adult' cat you see could merely be a one year old cat (termed an 'older kitten' amongst fanciers) and it's perfectly alright for her to continue feeding her cat kitten food.
I had to take my cat off kitten food at 8 months of age. His vet said that's OK because he gained too much weight. Kitten food is very high in calories and protein. We put him on a light adult formula cat food and now he's at a healthy weight. They can developer serious health problems being overweight.
Why not just feed the cat the right food?
The difference between adult food and kitten food is CALORIES. Kittens need the extra energy to support their extremely fast growth. Adults don't need it and if fed kitten food, they will get fat. Rather quickly.
It will probably end up fat! Kitten food is extra high in calories, it's only supposed to be fed to growing animals.

Don't understimate how bad being overweight is for a cat or dog - it's as bad as being very skinny in that it puts too much strain on the heart. It also puts strain on the joints leading to arthritis, and makes cat prone to urinary tract infections, cancers and diabetes. Besides which a cat shouldn't BE fat, they're supposed to be lithe and supple and able to jump around!

An excess of vitamins can also have effects as bad as not having enough vitamins. Tell you friend all this to make her lose the kitten food - they should not be on it after 18 months of age. Anyway, isn't it more expensive than adult iams?!

Chalice
could start to damage the liver.
Not good. Too much fat for an adult, and not the right kind of nutrients.

What happens if I fed my cat chocolate?

I have fed my cat a tiny bit of chocolate-(white), and she likes it? What would happern if I gave her more, because I know that dogs get diarohear if they have chocolate?
Answers:
Most chocolate contains lecithin, which I know can be fatal to dogs (it's cumulative, like lead) Not sure if it would have the same effect on a cat but I would not risk it.

There are a number of artificial sweeteners which can cause kidney failure in animals, and sugar is bad for them anyway.
In fact, the rule is to avoid giving animals any type of processed food unless it is specially made for animals.

If your cat has a sweet tooth, offer her slivers of fresh fruit such as strawberries, canteloupe (pawpaw) sweet apples or peaches - I had a couple of cats, brother and sister, as it happens, who loved fruit, especially canteloupe and peaches.
THIS IS BAD FOR HER , Dont do it they cant handle it in there system, Same with dogs, You can get special chocholate for dogs from pet shop but i dont know about cats,She will also may be sick and dioreah, Make sure she has water avaliable or milk
YOU WILL KILL IT but thats gd i HATE CATS
It doesn't make sense to feed a cat any type of processed sugar. Without even researching, I'd say it's best to not feed it to her ever again.
it could turn into a KIT KAT...
your cat will be sick, my little boy dropped abit off his chocolate bar on the floor the other day and my cat being greedy decided to eat it, within a few hours she was throwing up!

if cats could eat chocolate do you not think that there would be KIT CATS for them??

please be responsible and just stick to feeding your cat the right food. it might really hurt her belly and she may be in pain and you wont even know..
no kind of chocolate is good for cats or dogs it can act as a poision in their systems
I'm sure you'll find out in a couple of hours anyway!

My cats eat all sorts- cheesy wotsits, egg, yoghurt, sikh kebab, chicken curry...

They helped themselves to all these things i hasten to add! Any food left unattended and they'll have it!

(Before i get lynched by a load of cat lovers by the way- they get fed more than enough cat food and biscuits, and they don't have worms.)
You should NEVER feed an animal chocolate. Chocolate can be fatal to animals.Theobromine, a component of chocolate, is the toxic compound in chocolate. (Caffeine is also present in chocolate, but in much smaller amounts than Theobromine.)
Theobromine's effect on the body:
Central Nervous System (CNS) stimulant
Cardiovascular stimulant
Increase blood pressure (mild)
Nausea and vomiting

Unsweetened (baker's) chocolate contains 8-10 times the amount of Theobromine as milk chocolate. Semi-sweet chocolate falls roughly in between the two for Theobromine content. White chocolate contains Theobromine, but in such small amounts that Theobromine poisoning is unlikely. Caffeine is present in chocolate, but less than Theobromine.

Quick Guide for Theobromine levels in different types of chocolate:
From The Merck Veterinary Manual, 8th ed

Unsweetened (Baker's) chocolate = 390-450 mg Theobromine per oz chocolate
Milk chocolate = 44-60 mg Theobromine per oz chocolate
Semi-sweet is a bit less than half of the Theobromine content as Baker's chocolate. The toxic dose of Theobromine (and caffeine) for pets is 100-200mg/kg. (1 kiliogram = 2.2 pounds). However, various reports by the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) have noted problems at doses much lower than this - i.e. 20mg/kg.
Don't feed it anymore! It is not a pet food - for any pet at such!

Even though I hate cats, I wouldn't want to hurt it.

- Good luck.
It will die, like your dog will die. Chocolate is not good for them. It will kill them. Never give chocolate to animals - they are not people and it is not appropriate to feed them people food.
white chocolate is NOT bad for animals. i know for dogs white chocolate can be fed upto 250 oz per pound of bodyweight before it will harm them. im not sure if thats the same for cats or not, but baking chocolate or cocoa is what you need to worry about.
Chocolate is a laxative and cats don't have the enzymes to digest it
Nor do they brush their teeth so you might have tooth decay and diahorrea and a cat with a sore tummy who not happy
Why would you do that to your cat?
your cat can die or get really sick.

What happen to my cat??

I left my cat with some friends for a week when I went on vacation. I recently returned to my cat not acting the same at all. He is way jumpy now and doesn't come to his name. He seems scared of everyone and everything. What happen to him? My friends say he was fine and they didn't hurt him or anything. They did put him a closet for punishment for 15 mins one night.. would this cause his behavior? Will he ever be the same? What can I do for him?? I want my kitty back... Thank you all for your help..
Answers:
He probably needs to get used to his suroundings again. Give him some time to adjust. He doesn't have the thinking skills that we do, so to him all of this moving around and being around different people can be a little scary. Give him time and he should come around. Good Luck.
weird.try to show him some extra love.maybe some cat nip would help too
Closet punishment? What kind of person did you leave your cat with? Some cats can get very traumatized from that no matter how long it is. That may be the underlying issue. It could also be that you left him with someone else so now he's mad at you. Just take things slow and I'm sure it will work out.
Urch! Putting a cat in a closet is a horrible thing to - and they said they didn't hurt him!! I mean, would you shut a child in a closet??!

One thing you can do for your cat is NEVER make him have to stay with these people again, maybe one day he'll get over the trauma!

Just give him time, quiet and reassurance and hopefully he will ease back into his familiar surroundings and be OK again.

If anyone did this to a pet of mine, I would be FURIOUS.

Chalice
Yeah, I wouldn't trust my cat with those people ever again. Closet punishment? Where is the logic in that? A cat doesn't understand. My guess is they DID hurt him in some way. Take him tot a vet to get checked out, just in case.
It could be that he isn't use to being seperated from you and will come around in time.

Is he use to your friends? If not, that could be it.
And putting him in the closet probably made it worse.

He probably didn't understand why you were gone and why strange people were putting him in a closet. He may have thought that you had abandoned him. And it could be that, even though you're back, he is now afraid that you will leave him.

Are you absolutely sure that your friends have the patience to deal with a cat without resorting to mistreatment? Only ever leave kitty with people who you know, without a doubt, that you can trust.

Kitty will be okay. He just needs some time and reassurance that you still love him.

****I agree with the people above who are saying that "closet punishment" is mistreatment, so I should have worded my post a little better. I also agree with the person who suggested that you take your cat to the vet just to make sure nothing is wrong with him.
They put him in a CLOSET?? THAT IS ABUSE!!

Sounds like that might not be all they did!

Don't ever leave your cats with those "friends" again!!

I can only HOPE that THEY do not have pets!

Please take your cat to a vet for XRays to make sure they didn;t hurt your cat in any other way!

Find a good pet sitter next time you go on vacation -- go to Pet Sitters International and locate a Responsible Trustworthy pet sitter in your area:

http://www.petsit.com/locate.asp...
first of all , they should have not put your kitty in the closet for punishment, that's was not very nice of them, i am a cat person, what they did too you kitty was prop, not giving him or her love and not paying any attention too your kitty and not feeding him. All cat, kitty and dogs needs lots of attention from friends and familys. I hope your kitty wills come around, But next time you should leave you kitty with your family member or in kennel. I hope your kitty will come around soon.
NEVER LEAVE YOUR CAT WITH THOSE PSYCHOS EVER AGAIN!! POOR THING!THATS HORRIBLE! TAKE IT TO THE VET JUST IN CASE!THATS CONSIDERED ANIMAL CRUELTY!
Some friends... I think they probably were mean to your cat... lose them.
I don't see what's wrong with isolating the kitty so he can cool down.I put my kitty in the bathroom for ten minutes if she freaks out so she can calm down and recharge by herself. She comes out of the bathroom happy and relaxed. However, the bathroom contains her litter box, toys, food, and water, so it's not like she's deprived of anything while she's in there. It's not abuse, it's giving her a chance to relax and let off some steam in a controlled environment. I don't have anything in the bathroom that she can destroy.

If your kitty has never left your house, this may be causing him to freak out. A cat that wasn't taken to a variety of places as a kitten won't be very happy going to new places as an adult. He may calm down after a few days, just show him some extra love and attention.
Well, first of all.I would NEVER ask those friends to watch my cat again! I am not saying that you are to blame. You did the right thing by trying to find someone you trust to watch over him while you were on vacation.:) However, them putting him in a closet for 15 minutes just sounds cruel. I would be furious is anyone treated my cats in that manner! I am sure that they are sugar coating the way that they behaved toward him. No animal lover would do that!

I think that your little kitty is probably just a little freaked out about having been left with people that did not show him the love that you normally give him. I am sure that with a little time and a lot of attention.he will resume his regular behavior. The poor little guy can't speak, so he has no way of telling you why he is upset.:( Give him lots of love and keep your "friends" away from him in the future.

I hope he gets back to normal soon! Best wishes to you both!
Only your cat knows what happened-
Best thing to do is take him to the vet and get some blood work done. When a cat is stressed, they can become deathly ill. Once that is checked out and if his lab work comes back okay, then you won't have to worry so much.
It might be wise to start over and reacquaint him to your home by keeping him in one quite room for a few days until he gets used to his surroundings again. Of course you'll want to feed him in there and give him a couple of litter boxes (remember the rule, one litter box more than the number of cats) and keep the litter box well away from the feeding area. Go in and visit with him and play with him and bond with him a lot, spend lots of time petting him, talking to him, giving him little treats and playing his favorite game. Then slowly bring him out into the rest of the house until he becomes accustomed to it again.
The next time you have to leave, it would be worth your money to hire a qualified pet sitter that will come into your home.
By the way, you can't teach a cat anything by closing it up in a closet, I think there's more to this story than your friends are telling you and if I were you, I'd look for better friends, their story sounds fishy.
Never, ever leave your cat with these people again. They're pretty dumb to think that leaving a cat alone in a closet works as punishment.

I have had to lock my cat in the bathroom before, but it was because there were people working on the door to my apartment and she would have escaped otherwise. She was a little jumpy and needy for about a week afterwards. Being trapped REALLY scares cats, since they are naturally in need of wide open spaces.

Also, if your friends are loud or have other animals, that could traumatize the cat as well if he is not used to such things. And, your friend COULD be lying about not having hurt the cat--he may have accidentally (or intentionally) injured the cat and doesn't want to tell you.

Sorry about your kitty! Give him lots of extra love and he should calm down after a little while.
I've left my cat with Friends before, and she's a shy cat to begin with. She never came back with any problems. She was alittle shy at there house, cause I wasn't with her. As soon as she was back home, with me, things were fine. I think something might have happened to her. I don't know if the closet did it, or something more. They might have hit her, before they put her in the closet.

Try not to raise your voice much. You'll have to be gentle with her, so she doens't think she's getting harmed. Cat nip might help bring her closer to you, so you can have some bonding time. Try treats, if she likes them. Make her come to you, and give her the treat. Maybe a new toy, play with her, let her know she's loved. In time, I'm sure she'll come back around. Don't ever let those friends watch her again. I think they harmed her, in some way.. Good luck to you and Kitty...
sounds like they arent being 100% honest with you...sounds as if they "abused" him to some degree...its going to take time until he is back to normal and for god's sake dont ever leave him with those people again
I think it's best to consult a vet, personally I'd never shut my cat in a closet so I don't have any idea on how this would effect him, but being done once for 15 minutes should not cause such a dramatic change in a cat's behavior. Get the poor thing to a vet asap.
It could be that he's reacting to you leaving him. But I'm willing to bet that either A) your friend did more than he said he did, or B) Something happened that your friend doesn't know about. Closing him in a closet can't have helped either.

Give your kitty a lot of love, and as much attention as he'll accept from you. And next time, board him with a kennel. Some vets offer boarding services as well.

Good luck.
Chances are that 99% of this comes from beng moved to a strange place and then moved again (back to your home). Cats LOVE routine and familiarity and get very scared of changes. While the "closet punishment" probably failed to teach your cat anything, I personally doubt that it was actually responsible for your cat's behavior, or as traumatic as people here are claiming. I still would not recommend using such treatment, but the responses here are an overreaction.

Every December I take my cat with me to my parent's house, and every time he is reclusive and cross for the first several days, on both sides of the trip. However, after he adjusts to the new surroundings, he is perfectly happy and returns to being the cat we know and love. I am sure that, given a few days or maybe a week, you cat should be fine. If his behavior becomes more erratic or if he does not show significant improvement by a week's time, *then* think about a trip to the vet. I would NOT do it right now, however, because this will set him back if he is just re-adjusting to his new surroundings (as I suspect he is). Keep the house as quiet and as calm as you can (eg, this would not be the time for a big noisy party), and keep your routine as regular as possible. That will help his adjustment go as smoothly and as quickly as possible. Good luck!
ok
15 mins of closet time
is not good
he needs lots of TLC

bless him

he's very stressed

1/ he thinks you abandoned him
2/he didnt know his new caretakers
3/the put him in total darkness iwth no exit for a long time

bless him

lots of TLC
tell your friends that they cant watch your cat anymore if they lock it in the closet.
treat him nicly
Some animals get very scared when they are left with strangers. If that place had a lot of loud - strange noises, that might do it. Give him some time, and a lot of love and he may return. Also, do you know whether they had the light off/on ? That can make a difference also.
It sounds like he is traumatized from being put in the closet while he was there, and he wasn't too thrilled about staying with strangers either. give him some extra love and attention, it'll take a while but he'll be ok. good luck.
If you have friends over a lot and your cat is very social with visitors then your friends lied. They abused your cat. Cats don't change like that in a weeks time under normal treatment. why would you give a cat a "time-out"? that doesn't make any sense to me. If your cat is one of those that hides when strangers come over then the cat was scared by its surroundings for that week and needs time to readjust. Just act like you normally do around your cat and it will eventually come around.
give him time and lots and lots of love your kitty should return to normal in a few days.
I am sorry that your friends put him in the closet for 15 mins.,
as this caused him to become afraid of being punished again.
Well you ever know does your friend have any other animals cuz they could have hurt your kitty but when I left my kitty with my grandma for a couple days she waz real jumpy but she got over it once I spoiled her some more!LOL
Well hope this helps
Wow your friends did what??? no wonder your cat is not himself, not only was he separted from you and his familiar surroundings he was put in a closet.
you will have to earn his trust again and be very patient with him, poor guy is probably confused as to what the heck happened. You must be quite upset about this. Just be patient with him and talk to him gently and sit on the floor and try and get him to come to you. Hopefully he will come around. As for your friends, would you ever trust them again to look after your cat?
Anyway good luck with your cat I hope that he comes around for you.
im sure there is perfectly good answer to why your cat is acting this way.. i would be suppisious too.. there is a way to find out what really happened.. find your self an animal psychic.. bit i would be getting your cat looked at by a vet.. other wise only your beloved cat will know what really happened.. all the best
your cat is mad at you right now. cats are emotional and touchy. and putting the cat in the closet yeah not a good idea. but your cat is mad that you left my cat did the same thing when i moved and i had to leave her with my mom. but give it a while i'm sure your cat will come around

What gift should I give my friend for looking after my cat for a year?

I had to go traveling and my friend fostered my cat for a whole 12 months

I paid for my cat's litter and food for the whole period and I am indebted to him for doing this

I don't have an enormous amount of money to give him. I think he wouild prefer cash than a gift he may not use, though. He is short of money.

Is a gift of cash a bit rude or tacky?

Any other ideas?

Money is cool, in a card like some suggested, perhaps if you can, make a card with your cat's picture on the front and put your cat's paw in some paint and have your pet "sign" the card too! You can do fairly cheap calendars at Wal-Mart using your own photos, that's another thought for a gift, using a photo of your cat, or you and your cat and maybe holding a big "Thank You" sign. Then your friend will have a year's worth of "thank you's" for his year's worth of cat-sitting. Honestly I think it's quite nice of you to want to give some money, and I don't think it's a tacky idea at all. If you could afford it, it would be nice coupled with a gift of some sort, but if a gift isn't in the budget, make it personal in some way and just let your friend know how very much you appreciate that he did that for you.

We board our dogs quite a bit when we have to be out of town and boarding isn't cheap, and when we still had cats and we had to go away, they'd stay at a local "Kitty Hotel" of sorts, it was great for a weekend but expensive, and your friend saved you who-knows-how-much in boarding fees, and made it possible for you to remain the owner of your cat while you weren't able to physically keep your cat with you. Such a wonderful friend you have, I don't think it's rude or tacky at all to show your appreciation with some money. Thrusting a fist full of cash in his face with no explanation wouldn't be an approach I'd take, so I won't suggest that, but doing it up nicely in a card at the very least would be appropriate I believe.
well,
no money
what about something big?
like... a DVD player or a cell phone.
it's a long time (a year)
buy a nice thank you card and insert the money in it
I have a beaut! Give this very compassionate guy a gift certificate at his favorite clothing store or a store that you know he likes and frequents. Gift certificates are always appropriate and does away with the problem of tackiness.
I think money is just fine.
Why not ask him what he'd prefer.
Just give him the cat - they've probably bonded by now anyway!
I have to agree with Animallover. I think a gift certificate is a lot better than money, because money just seems as if you put no thought into the gift at all. Find out what he needs the most, and get a gift voucher from a store that sells those items.
When I look after someone's pet...they typically pay me cash, rather than give me a gift. I know I would much rather take the cash =)
Well i don't think giving money is tacky at all. I am sure it will come in handy as well i would give it in a thank you card with a nice note inside of your appreciation. He is a very nice person do such a huge favor like that.
give him a thank you card and give him cash its not rude and get him something nice thats small inexpensive that he may use a year is alot and he should be akcnoleged for that

What funny things do your cats do to get your attention to play with them?

I have one who brings me toys to play fetch with, and drops them in front of me like a dog. She will also try to wake me up when I'm asleep, wanting to play fetch. I can usually tell how long she has been trying to wake me up by how many toys are laying by my face!

One of my cats (a retired breeding queen) carries a certain ball around and "chortles" like she's calling her kittens. I have heard mama kats (sorry, I had to) call their kittens this way. She only does this with her "baby" as I call it, and only when no one is looking. She drops the ball when you come in the room. If her baby accidentally rolls under the dresser, she sits and stares under it until someone (read: me) gets it out for her. She's such a doll!
When I am doing bills or have a book in front of me, he crawls up slow like he's sneaking and lays across the paper til I can't see it anymore and play w/him
My little kitten Moon plays fetch too. She will jump on my shoulder and cry and purr for me to love on her and play. She will only fetch with little furry mice too. Nothing else.
My cat plays fetch too. He likes his shoestring. So he'll bring that to me while i'm on the computer or trying to sleep. Then he makes a cute little "brrt" noise.
My cat will cry into the air to get my attention...he is a Siamese.so he's naturally talkative. Also, I got him in October.and I had dressed up that year as Medusa for Halloween..I had rubber snakes for my hair. Now, 2 years later..he STILL loves the rubber snakes, and he will bring them to me....while I'm in bed. Sometimes I will find the snakes under my covers..and they freak me out! He loves his snakes!
My cat makes this annoying meow that sounds something like 'Nowl' then she pretends to play tug-of-war with her toy and an imaginary person. Then she barks (yes, she's a cat). The she lays on my lap top/book/oil on canvas (okay, I don't paint, I sketch, but oil was funnier), flips on her back, stretches her arms to my face and screams "Nowl!!" and then we play.
well when I slept over at my g/f house, her cat
would first climb onto the window still and then jump
down on to the bed where we were sleeping
we called it a Mort (her name for her cat)quake
my own cat when I had her,(I used to play scrabble (the board game) by myself, and when she wanted attention
she would climb onto the board and start to swish her tail
so I would have to pay attention to her and not the game
(I had a lot of games called on accounts of Cats tail!
One of my cats loves my husband, and she will rub on his legs and meow. Neither of my cats meow very much, so we know she wants attention when she does that. My other cat is my baby, and she will lay on my newspaper or magazine if I'm reading one or just jump in my lap on top of whatever else may be in my lap. If I'm playing the Nintendo Wii, she will rub on my legs and get on her back and nip at my ankles. She likes to do it when I'm on my last bowling frame, and she ruins my score! But, she's a cutie, so it's okay.
Mine will come and walk up under my chair, then turn and pounce with both paws on my knee or protruding leg, for instance, no claws though, LOL! When I look down at her she's looking the other way like she's nowhere near the area at the time, LOL!
When im sitting on the floor reading the paper, my cat will come over while im reading and scratch at the paper, and than lay across it and just stare at me. Its soooo cute!!
Our cat was just going up to my husband and biting him on the arm to get him to start their rough play.

What foods are safe for cats?

im getting two new kittens at 6 wks old whe can they get shots, neutered, and what food do i feed them... wet or dry or both and what brand please help my other cat died from meow mix
Answers:
Kittens should not be going home at 6 weeks they should be at least 8 weeks, that is also the time frame for 1st shots.
1st shots @ 8wks, 2nd shots @ 12 wks, 3rd
shots @ 16 wks and annual boosters.

Neuter should be done at 6 months to be on the safe side, some vets will do it a little earlier but because they are anaesthetized for the surgery, their weight %26 size is must be sufficient enough to handle it. Your vet will recommend best time for surgery based on how well your kitten is growing.

For food I recommend only food available from the vet's office because you can be confident in the quality of ingredients and proper nutrient levels. Definately you need a kitten variety. My cat eats a brand called Royal Canin (specialty vet diets) she has wet food only and loves it, they do also have varietys of dry food. Royal Canin does have food available in select petfood supply stores also a good choice.

Wet/dry is a personal choice, my 16 yr old female is on wet only, you must be consistant with feeding times so they are not always hungry.

It is perfectly alright to have a bowl of dry food out at all times and also meal feed them wet food, but be sure to keep an eye on how much they are eating so you don't over feed them.

Some cats prefer only dry food, if this is their choice there is no point buying wet food if they won't eat it.

You will have healthy kittens if you choose the best quality food for them, you can consult your vet for recommendations on food too.
Always provide plenty of fresh water.
Definitely use a kitten formula. I think Science Diet is the best. Iams and Eukanuba are good too. I have learned that with cat food, you get what you pay for. With kittens, you want to be especially careful with their nutritional needs. You may want to mix some wet kitten food into the dry. My experience has shown me that kittens have soft stools and too much wet food just makes it worse. Good luck.
"Wellness" makes a safe, really healthy canned cat food. A kitten formula even. They also make a dry and another good brand is "California Natural" for dry. You can not get them at the big pet stores...but call around to some smaller ones...good luck.
Eukanuba lamb and rice is the absolute best...its a dry food and you can free feed which means the bowl should always be full...get the animals spade before their heat ask the animal control...if they are to be indoor cats then shots aren't necessary...if they are going out then shots are important...feline lukemia is not present before 5 yrs...if you keep them in then they remain safe, free of fleas and clean...oh in Tucson I house sat for a couple who put chicken wire all around their fence in the back yard, and on the tree so the cats couldn't get out or the yard...then they left a window open with a climb pole to climb in and out...they allowed them outside only when they were home...the cats loved their life and didn't look to go out of their yard...it was a great idea...the wireing was on the wrong side of the fence and rolled over to form a domb over the fence the cats could go under it but not over the fence...it was great...so I did it too.
Get a meat based formula without corn, wheat or soy. Make them eat dry food because that will keep them from losing their teeth when they are old. If their teeth aren't strong enough, then you can moisten the food with a little warm water until they can eat dry food.

Chicken Soup for the Kitten Lover's Soul is sold at cat shows, and is wonderful. I would stay away from All grocery store brands.

Even Science Diet is no good, you are paying for the brand name and not the product, because corn is in the top 5 ingredients, plus they use wheat gluten, which is the cause of all those recalls.
Royal Canin makes a formula of dry food, called BABY CAT.
I like their products, and when I got two of my cats, as kittens, the breeder provided me with a sample bag. The pieces are MUCH smaller than regular cat food, and the ingredients have the right amount of protein, vitamins and fat content, for weight gain and growth.
I feed my cats a combination of wet and dry. I would split a 3 oz can of fancy feast chicken slices for kittens. (So far, it has NOT been involved in the food recalls.)
Turkey sometimes makes their stools soft, or gives them gas.
I also like the Purina ProPlan canned food for kittens... I think it is chicken and liver.
I stay away from any fish canned food, with kittens -- it makes their stools really stink something awful. And kittens are not always very adept at covering their deposits in the litter box.
I've always started my kittens off with a dry kitten formula (Iams, Purina One, etc.) then gradually introduce them to wet kitten food.
milk or fish
When I had kittens I fed them milk at first. But I would leave a little bowl of dry food, that had been soaked in water til soft then mashed, out to see if they were ready to eat hard food. When they managed to eat the mashed food for a month, I tried hard food made for kittens. Cats can be neutered as early as 6-8 weeks old. When you go and get them neutered, ask about their shots. Good luck!
Hi
Unfortunatly, you have alot of bad answers here and it's going to be tough to decide what to do. cats are carnivores and don't need carbs. Have you ever heard of a cat eating rice in the wild? Cat's need protein and water and most cats get their water from their food. Canned foods that don't have gravy is what is best for all cats. Dry foods can lead to a host of problems down the line.

What flowers if any are harmful to cats?

http://catartgallery.blogspot.com...
Answers:
Lilies in particular are extremely poisonous to cats and can be a potential cause of kidney (renal) failure in cats. The entire plant, leaves, stamen, pollen etc. are all poisonous. Symptoms of poisoning can occur within two hours and include vomiting, depression and lack of appetite. No matter how little of the plant has been eaten, or even if your cat has just washed pollen off it's coat, veterinary advice should be sought immediately as time is of the essence

Below is a link to a list of plants that are toxic to cats. This web site also gives information for each plant on what symptoms to look for that would alert you that your cat may have been poisoned by eating a particular plant.

Flowers %26 Plants that can be Harmful to Cats

Cats love plants the way dogs love chocolate, which is strange because cats are mainly carnivores. However, though most animal species learn to stay away from things that make them sick, cats will eat plants over and over with the same results. Does this sound familiar, you lactose-intolerant people out there? Below is a list of potentially harmful flowers and plants along with their levels of toxicity from poisonous, dangerous to downright deadly.

Flower or Plant Level of Harm
Iris dangerous
Castor Bean especially deadly, one seed can kill
Azalea dangerous
Foxglove dangerous
Hydrangea dangerous
Amaryllis poisonous
Japanese Yew dangerous
Daffodil poisonous
Mistletoe deadly
Hyacinth poisonous
Honeysuckle poisonous
Poinsettia can induce vomiting
Pine Tree (aka Christmas Tree) Ingesting needles or drinking tree water can induce vomiting and
gastrointestinal irritation.
Lily of the Valley dangerous
Other Lily (Easter, Tiger, Star-Gazer) dangerous - can cause acute kidney failure
Oleander dangerous
Rhododendron dangerous

What features make an ideal scratching post for our cat?

Answers:
It depends on the cat. Some prefer vertical scratching post to horizontal. The material that it is made out of matters to.

The three cats that I currently have right now like the homemade cat condo with carpeting on it. We also have the disposable cardboard scratching pad covered in catnip.

To train the cat to use the scratching post rub the scratching post with catnip, cat treat crumbs, or cat food crumbs to attract them. Praise them when you see them using it. Also don't rub moist food the post because it may cause bacteria growth.
Scratching posts can be found at pet stores and sometimes vets. they are usually just bits of wood covered in carpet that stand up by them selves. If you don't want to buy one, cover a sturdy object like a pole in carpet.

%26lt;3 Maggot!!
Anything that they can sink their claws into works well. If you can try to position it around the area where they sleep. Cats tend to scratch more around their beds then anywhere else.
Most commercial scratch posts have carpet fastened to a post. I have found that cats prefer the underside of the carpet, the jute backing . Much better to dig their claws into. More like the arm of your couch, which they really like.
Apparently the chair in our living room does a great job..
It largely depends on the cat. I have 12 cats, and some of them prefer to scratch the bare logs we have outside in their enclosure. We made them a huge tower, with the platforms covered in carpet, which some love to use as a scratch post. The uprights on which the platforms rest are covered with jute rope, and some of them use this most. We also have two of those disposable cardboard ones in the house, one flat and one upright. These two have hardly been used at all, and just sit there like useless ornaments! We use an inexpensive carpet tile to cover the platforms, because these some of them rip to shreds, and they have to be changed every now and again.
In order to make the right decision over what type scratching post or matt will be right for your cat, you will first have to observe certain things:
1. What kind of of objects does your cat like to scrach? Are these vertical objects (wall, door frame, etc); stand-alone objects (chairs; other furnitures); horizontal objects (floor carpet, rugs, matts, table tops, wooden planks laid flat)? If your cat likes to stretch and claw against a vertical object like a door, get him a scrathing pad you can ahng against a vertical surface. If he likes to scratch stand-alone objects, get him a scratching post. If on the other hand he likes to scratch horizonat surfaces, get him a scratching matt.
2. What kind of MATERIAL does your cat favor to sharpen his claws? Carpet? Cardboard? Wood? Sissal rope? Many cats enjoy shagg-pile carpets. Others like wood (like one of my cats). Others are crazy about cardboard (like my other cat).
3. Where does the cat scratch and sharpen his claws? Whe you do decide on the type of scratcher, position it as near as possible to his favorite scratching areas. Show it to him and demonstrate what it is for by scratching the thing yourself a few times.
4. If your cat like catnip. rub a little on the new scratching post, matt or hanger to make it even more attractive.
We make our own scratching posts using a 4 x 4 piece of lumber at least 3' long. We use a round, plywood base as wide as the post is tall and attach it using bolts. (Round does not tip over as easily as square.) Add extra wood to the outside edges so the base will sit level and the base won't be resting on the bolts. Cover the post and base with carpeting, using staples to attach it. You will need to get a heavy-duty stapler to do this and may need to use nails to fasten the heavier places. The carpeting used can be old carpeting, no longer suitable for the house or leftovers called remnants, which are generally pretty cheap. Rub the post with catnip to attract the cats. A post of this size offers both horizontal and vertical places to scratch. You can also buy jute to attach to the vertical spaces, but that is more expensive.

The post should be this height so the adult cat can stretch out, which is the normal position for scratching. You can also use carpeting to match or coordinate with what's in your house if you're into decorating. When the carpeting starts to get "stringy" you can remove it and put new carpeting on. This kind of scratching post can last almost forever.
Generally a rough surface.
An object it can sink it's claws into without it falling over on the cat. Most cat scratching posts I have gotten tip on my cats so they would use them once, tip it over, flounce off in disgust. Finally I tied a post to the kitchen table so they could really dig in. when the rug got tattered I bought some sisal rope and wrapped that area. My cats loved it more than ever. I recently I found out they love the corrugated cardboard ones just laid flat on the floor as well.
