Well, it seems I can't use soft paws, as she goes outdoors.?

Any suggestions as to how I can get my cat to stop clawing at the rug. She has a cat scratcher, uses it sometimes, but if she's not near it, she goes after the rug. I've tried about everything I can think of.

If there's a certain area she goes for, put double sided tape down for a while. Cats hate anything sticky.

Good luck! :)
If she doesnt seem to want to use the scratching post, try rubbing it with cat nip, that will draw her to it more often. Secondly, if you place peices of scotch tape on the rug where she scratches it (this way she can't see it), when she goes to scratch the rug, the tape will stick to her paws, and it will drive her crazy. if she doesnt learn after the first time, it will only take her a few times to associate the rug with this HORRIBLE thing that attaches itself to her paws. (and it wont harm her, just drive her nuts).

Also, you could buy a second scratching post and put it near the rug she scratches, this gives her the option of the scratching post instead of the rug. Good luck!
just leave some old rug that's ok to for her to claw. if you can't then if the room has doors then maybe you could make that room a restricted room for her if her food or litter isn't in there.
