Vet is stump. Cat eats everything, but loses weight?

X-Ray, diet, blood tests everything shows very healthy 13 yr old. Hasn't lost interest in things plays, sleeps (and sleeps) and goes in cat box. Indoor cat. Was 14lbs 9/06 now 8lbs 5/07. Vet wants to get $250 MRI, can't afford. Need some answers.

With the blood tests did he test for diabetes? It is actually rather common in cats and often overlooked. Drinking lots of water and loosing wait is definite sines.

If you know someone with diabeties you can even test with there glucose meter. Hope it helps. O and if it is don't worry it's perfectly treatable
does it have worms??
Sometimes as cats get older they start to lose weight naturally, but 8lbs is really light for a fully grown cat. Maybe you could get a loan for the MRI and then pay it off...if it will help you're cat then i'm sure it's worth it.
if u have house plants the cat could be eating the plants and regurgitating the grass tho clean its stomach out and food could come with it or u could just check 2 see if the food it is eating is diet if it is dont buy any more
Hello there, just because the blood work came back fine doesn't mean everything. Blood results can change from day to day and different times during the day. Was your cat checked for hyperthyroidism? He needs a T4 done. I mention this because his blood can be in range but almost out of range and the vet will not treat him with medication. I know this from a personal level for myself and my Maine Coon. I had to insist to see the blood work and then go to another doctor. His T4 was in range but on the higher end of the scale and the vet would not treat him. I had the same problem with myself and my own thyroid. I knew I felt bad and told the doctor, unfortunately your cat cannot communicate like that. If the blood work is ok, then maybe a MRI is a last resort. Good Luck.
He might have thyroid problems. That happened to my neighbor. Good luck. You should bring that up to your vet. Sorry about your cat.
Someone did mention diabetes and the symptoms you describe can point to that direction but don't see how a vet can miss it. Can you call your vet and ask if he got a blood glucose value? If not, go to the pharmacy and get some ketodiastic reagent strips to check the urine for sugar and ketones.
This is also the symptoms of hyper thyroid but don't know how it could be missed if blood tests were done. best of luck
You should see another vet! Take all the vet records to someone else and get a second opinion!! that's just not right unless it just way more active then it use to be???
Your cat sounds to be doing fine. The cat is getting older and slowing down. Has the cat's eating habits changed??
Cats will sleep more as they do become older. When your cat does go out does it stay in your yard or is it able to run anywhere and everywhere???
If the cat is able to get out of the yard no telling what it is getting into.
I believe I would try and keep the cat in the house at all times. For sure if you can't keep the cat in your yard. You would be so worried if your cat didn't come home one day??

I have never understood why people let their cats go outside in the first place!!
All the things that the cat could get hurt by?? I would worry myself silly!!!

Try and keep the cat in the house and buy what ever kind of food it would like to eat. The cat maybe running the weight off its self. That can happen. Is it a boy or girl cat??
If it is a boy then he could be running himself silly after all the girl cats!! I have seen this happen!!
I have a cat and she is fixed the very first thing I did when I got her from the shelter!! Cats live longer if they are fixed!!

I would though try and keep your cat inside and feed it well to see if you can put weight back on the cat. Since 8 months it has lost 6 pounds that is not all that bad for a cat that runs outside. Or does it go out to potty then comes right back in??
Good Luck
P.S. keep the poor cat in the house!! It is getting older and not able to run as fst from the dogs as it used to..
That happened to one of my cats as well. She eats like a little piggy but only weighs 5 lbs. It turned out her kidneys were failing. We put her on Hill's k/d and her latest bloodwork results looked good. She's still pretty small but she seems ok.
I would find another vet and get a second opinion.
These are classic symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Two percent of cats with the disease have bloodwork that appears in the normal range (that's per Dr. Lore Haug of Texas A %26 M, if the vet wants to know the source). An MRI is the only way to confirm it. It might be worth asking the vet if it's okay to treat the cat for the disease and see if she improves. If not, try to work out some sort of payment plan, if possible, to get the MRI done.
Just like people, sometimes cats need a 2nd opinion. I highly recommend it. I would be very concerned if this was my cat. Best of luck.
My cat was eating and losing weight--turns out he had anemia. After many blood transfusions and surgery to remove his spleen---he died.
Maybe you should take your cat to another vet-----I took my cat to a specialist.
Good luck.
