What can I do to help this poor kitten?

My cat gave birth to one kitten last night. She almost didn't accept the kitten at first, she seemed scared of it. Eventually she started cleaning it off. I thought everything was fine. The next morning I inspected the kitten and noticed that there is no tail, and just a bloody scab where there should have been one. The kitten appears to be fine otherwise, but whines when the tail area is touched. The mother cat is now nursing and laying with the kitten. Should I worry about this, and if so what can I do? Also, will the tail ever grow back? I really would appreciate any answers to this.

No problem, your mommy kitty probably bred with a manx, I love these cats.

The Manx is a breed of cats with a naturally occurring mutation of the spine. This mutation shortens the tail, resulting in a range of tail lengths from normal to tailless. Many Manx have a small 'stub' of a tail, but Manx cats are best known as being entirely tailless and it is the distinguishing characteristic of the breed.

They are great cats, my kitty's name was Mocha...she had a very short tail (almost nothing), yet her brother's tail was about a half inch long, his name was Skyler, which my best friend adopted. The tail won't grow back, it's genetic. They are so much fun to watch, their balance isn't the same as a cat with a long tail. Watch his/her back end when they grow...it's so funny and so endearing. You will love this kitten, it's genetic.unless you bred your cat intentionally and know that she's had no other alternative, if you know what I mean. Click on the link below to view Manx cats.

Lots of cats do not have tails. But if it is scabby and it seems to iritate the kitten, I would put neosporm on it, or ask the vet.
I'm wondering if since she was unwilling to accept the kitten at first, she might have started eating it to get rid of it in the middle of the night, but then changed her mind. My advice is get to a vet or animal hospital as soon as possible. I don't know if the tail will grow back, though.
No the tail won't grow back. It will always be a stub or without a tail if no stub is there. You should get a Vet to check the kitten, but it is good that the mother is feeding it and acting fine with it now. However, she may have EATEN other kittens. So please get a Vet check and don't touch the tail stub.
Call your vet right away. Because it will not survive and it will break your heart.

the tail will not grow back i would take it to the vet just to make sure that it is all right. sometmes it does happen to any animal that gives birth. its a part of life
i agree with noose45, also maby, where the tail was, the mother might have cleaned a little 2 hard, with out realizing she was hurting her baby, and my cat, when she had her kittens a few years ago, would not clean them or any thing, till i pet each of them oh their head. it was so gross, but i had to do it. she would look at her kittens, then at me and meow. i don't know why, but she took great care of them after that. good luck.
Take both cats to the vet and see if the little one is alright then take the mom cat and see if there is a problem with that cat. You may have to separate the 2 cats.
well the kitten is going to be very special looking the tail wont grow back but if theres a scab it should be fine
I've seen this happen before. The mother cat accidentally bit the tail off, when she was cleaning the kitten. (They eat the umblical cord)
(Sometimes it takes a bit for mom to get to cleaning right after giving birth, this is not unusual)
Mom will clean it off and I'm sure poor kitty is sore.
If all else is fine then kitty should survive, just wait and see because it's all you can do.

*****If the kitten was a manx kitten then there would not be a scab and nope cats are not lizards and cannot regenerate lost tails.*****
