I wish people would understand that they need to take a cat that urinates outside the box to the vet. Everyone is quite quick to claim "BEHAVIOR" without checking. The advent of dry cat food has caused FLUTD (google it, ok?). It is the cause of so many cat euthanasias and it is a treatable condition. Take your cat to the vet first, then check on behavior issues. We do it with humans, rule out medical conditions, so do it with your cat.

Susan, thanks for that, I just hope people read that. It's mostly the cause, but not always.
I try and give some suggestions to such answers but also say that they should take the animal to the vet where they can get more proffesional and acurate advice rather than the responses from Y!A

I agree. If a cat has used a litterbox then suddenly doesn't then there is a medical reason 9 out of 10 times. My cat did this exactly and I knew something was wrong, she had blood in her urine and an infection. By going outside of her box, it was her way of telling me something was wrong, in my opinion. People should understand that animals can have medical problems just the same as humans. When you choose to have an animal you should treat them as you would your children, regular check ups, proper care and nutrition.
no question, just facts.
