What could cause a kitten to have trouble meowing?

I found an orphan kitten a week or so ago. She eats well (is actually getting a tummy... is that bad?) and is playful and seems healthy. Except on occasion it seems she's forgotten how to meow. She'll try but nothing will come out but a small grunt. Could something be wrong?
Answers:
if she can meow, and it doesnt sound unsual when she does actually do it, and shes eating fine... then shes probably yawning or stretching and not actually trying to meow.
.
it could be alot of things...but how ould is the kittie.if tis really young..then it has really devalop.. if its a bit older like a few weeks then there is some thing else wrong.but you should take it to a vet..
and the fat part is a very very good thing
In the language of cats there is the "silent" meow. I have one cat out of five that almost exclusively uses this meow. I have although heard her actually meow but very softly. This silent meow does have some significance. I believe it means the cat is very content and secure in its environment.

What could be wrong with my poor little kitty?

her eye is closing on her, and she keeps looking at me so sadly, she keeps licking her paw then rubbing her eye, could she have an infection? Is there an over the counter remedy I could buy for this. I just noticed this today, wont be able to get to a vet until probably monday, is there anything I can do now to help her? shes breaking my heart. can this spread to her other eye, or to kids?
Answers:
Sorry dear, but the problem with your kitty is that she has an owner that isn't calling a vet. At least CALL, they will answer all your questions and tell you if you can treat it at home, or need a visit. good luck
Try taking a warm wet wash cloth and covering her eye. Keep the eye rinsed out with a war NOT HOT eye dropper. What those claws!
If this does not work or it get worse by monday call a vet. If she doesn't have goo oozing she may have something in it.
There might be a vet open tomorrow..check your yellow pages and see or even an 24 hr care vet..there are some out there. hope your kitty is fine..
depending on what the problem is, yes, it can spread to her other eye, and yes, it might be able to spread to humans.

you can clean her eye with a luke warm saline solution = warm water in a cup with a pinch of salt.
swab her eye gently using this and a cotton ball (make sure you wash your hands well before and after).

then get her to the vet as soon as you can. a bad eye infection can cause blindness.. she will probably need anitibiotic cream.
.
warm wash cloth def... when i got my kitten when i found her when was was 3 weeks old and starved her eye was sealed shut and swollen i opened the eye and puss came out alot ... scared me i thought i busted her eye but she had an eye infection and i used a clean warm wash cloth everyday ... it like a pink eye on cats .. there eyes will drain and it can close on them u need to keep it clean and it should get better .. no eye drops or nothing like that just use a wash cloth that wha i used and her eye got better when i could take her to the vet the vet said her eye was improving using this so keep doing it and it did get better .. but i dont think it could spread to your kids but it can spread to her other eye.. it just like having a pink eye in a human perspective ... if the wash cloth does not seem like it improving your cat eye in a week doing so take her to the vet ...im not a vet but i know vets told me nothing about salt i wouldnt use salt if i was u.. u would put salt and warm water on your eye it dry out and burn now imagine it on a cat more sensitivty
Kitty may have some kind of eye irritation. Dissolve a pich of table salt in a cup of distilled or purified warm water. Use it to gently wash kitty's eyes. Use a cotton ball. The salt will help kill bacteria and the warm water wil help sooth kitty's eyes. It is NOT important that kitty's eyes remain open while you clean it out. If the eye does not improve by Monday, take kitty to the vet.
She definitely got an eye infection and yes it cud spread to her other eye as well. Theres not dat u can really do at home coz da doc will need to give her an antibiotic injection and put some eyes drops in her eye for now u can call da vet n just ask for da appropriate eye drop and do take an appointment for da earliest as per ur convenience. Taking her to da vet is important. Cats need anti-rabies, deworming and some other kinda injections to keep them fit.
is a cold fever.feed ur kitty anti biotic pil(for ppl use is same),with water/milk .pam inside to his/her mouth.1 day twice.
Yes, there is an over the counter remedy. The type I used most recently was a powder that was "puffed" into the eye. I can't remember the name. I live in a rural area of the south and we have "farm %26 feed" type stores, and they sell many OTC meds. Best wishes! E-mail me if you have trouble finding the meds...
If she's rubbing her eye I think it's more likely she has a foreign object in there (like a speck of glass or maybe a hair poking her). A foreign body may cause a secondary infection. Dogs do not usually rub their eyes when they have infections.

You need to get to a vet asap, but until then the only thing that is safe is to use cooled boiled water on cotton wool and gently wipe the eye. Try to stop the puppy from rubbing it, it will only make it worse.

Are there really no vets in your area that are open weekends? That's pretty rubbish. Look on www.yell.com, look at your area to see if there are any weekend vets.

What could be wrong with my cat's leg?

My cat jumped up onto the dog kennel and got his leg stuck in one of the holes. He was hanging there screaming, and by the time I got to him he detached himself and ran and hid. It's been 3 days, he limps, and cries when you touch his leg or pick him up. He eats and used the potty normally. He seems to sleep a lot. I've tried using ice on it. And it doesn't seem to be swollen or hot. Today, he's been putting a small amount of pressure on it, otherwise he just hops around. Could it be sprained or fractured? Is there anything I can do for him at home that would help?
Answers:
It sounds like a sprain or dislocation to me. Since you are not sure what to do about this, it would be wise to contact a vet.
No. You need to take him to the vet. He has sustained an injury and has been in pain for 3 days, and your vet should determine whether there has been a fracture.
I don't think there's anything you can do at home that would help. Three days is too long to let him suffer without getting him medical attention. You need to get him to a vet ASAP. The vet will determine what is wrong and treat him.
depending on the type of material which surrounded the leg there could be a number of problems it sounds like you need to get him to the vet to be sure.
you need to take him to a vet cause they need to do x rays ton find out what is wrong with his leg
The vet is always a good choice when dealing with sick or injured animals. Could be sprained, dislocated, broken, needs medical attention today.
It could be a bad sprain or a dislocation. However, if he's started putting a little weight on it, then he may have just had a sprain. Putting ice on it was good (as long as you put a towel or something between the ice and him); and you could alternate ice on for 20 minutes, off for 20 minutes and then alternate with warm packs. Also, restricting his movement to a small area will help him recover sooner. If he doesn't show a LOT of improvement in the neaxt day or two, though, I'd get him to the vet. DO NOT GIVE HIM TYLENOL, IBUPROFEN OR ASPIRIN!
V-E-T. If he cries and is limping, he is in pain. It could be dislocated, sprainted, fractured. Only the vet and probably an xray will be able to tell the extent of the injury. But he is in pain so I would get to the doctor asap.
What the...? Take him to a vet!

It's very possible the leg is fractured. Swelling, heat and inflammation are only immediate signs of the tissue damage.

Cats are STUPENDOUS at hiding pain. Only on wednesday I met a 6 week old kitten with a SLIGHT limp - even the vets weren't expecting to see the complete fracture that was on the xray. It wasn't even the 'greenstick' fracture that growing animals usually get - his femur was snapped clean in half. He was putting his foot to the groud - cats are rock hard.

Your poor cat. She needs medical attention and is relying on her owner to provide it - I hope you do.

Chalice
take him to the vet.

its probley fractured
Take your cat to the vet.why on earth would you let your cat run around in pain for THREE days!!!???
Please take your cat to the vet. Even though the leg may look normal to you, there is no way to find out how bad the leg is damaged unless u take him to the vet.Your cat has already been suffering in pain for 3 days so dont delay, bring him to the vet ASAP. There might be infection setting in, u might not know.

What could be wrong with my cat?

My cat is 11 yrs. old and over the last few months, she developed swelling above her right eye, some red patches (not sure if these are sores) inside her ears with some swelling of the ears as well, and it sounds like her nose is congested when she breathes. She doesn't appear to be in distress. She is eating the same as always. Someone told me she might have leukemia. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Answers:
Take her to the vet.
Doesn't sound like leukemia. Could be an allergy, an abscess, a foreign body reaction, or cancer.

Only a vet can tell Please take her to one as soon as possible.
Kitty needs to see a vet.

Feline Leukemia is a viral disease that causes the immune system to become weak. There aren't really any symptoms of the disease, per say, but rather secondary infections that produce symptoms because of the weak immune system. It's always possible that it could be Leukemia, especially if she isn't vaccinated and goes outside.

If I had to make an educated guess, I'd say it's an ear infection or growth of some kind in the ear canal. Could even be ear mites. However, the only way to be sure exactly what it is, is to bring kitty to the vet.

*edit*
If kitty hasn't been with you her whole life, and you don't know her vaccination history, than a blood test for FIV might not be accurate. There is no current test that can distingush between a cat who has FIV and one that has been vaccinated for it. A test can tell you if she has Leukemia, though.
Feline leukemia and FIV, the feline version of AIDS are closely related viruses that compromise the immune system. This can produce a whole host of symptoms including systemic reactions that mimic allergies. A simple blood test at the vet will rule out both, and she can be checked for skin or ear mites, infections, and other symptoms that might help with a diagnosis and treatment.
I would immediatly take her to a vet. Cause it could be very serious. By the way, it is your responsibility to take her to the vet.

What could be making my cats sick?

I have 5 cats, 3 adults and 2 kittens that I got last week. The adult cats have been throwing up for the last 3 days or so, not so much today, but the other day my house was a Vomit Fest!! We called the vet %26 they suggested it may be distemperment, but I looked it up and they aren't showing any other symptoms, and that goes with alot of the feline illness I looked at. . Their food is contaminate free - I've had it since before the recalls. . . Any suggestions?
Answers:
There could be many reasons, but the simplest are:

Change of diet, if they have been fed something different then the digestive systems need to adjust. Put them on just a good quality dry food and stay away from canned food or fresh meat until it has settled and introduce them back slowly.

Worms, have you wormed them? Sometimes the worming paste/tablet can make them vomit. And then sometimes a worm burden can make them vomit as well.

Try those and if it still continues a trip to the vet may be the go. Good luck
Maybe they just ate something nasty. Chances are it'll wear off. Good luck! ;)
The usual suggestion -- take them to a vet. Nobody can diagnose over the phone or in PetQnA.com .
You should take your cats to the vet because he'd know the best by going to college and learning about that stuff.
I dont know if this will be right or not...but...when i got my cat there were simularities...he even hid behind the washing machine foro a week...we had to bring him food...so my suggestion is to just LOVE them, give them lots of cuddles, also they could be allergic to something..maybe a disease of somesort, but they ar eprobably just scarred...also never give them milk!!! there is a special kind at petco, petsmart etc.
Good Luck! I hope i helped
will when my cat sick she goes outside and eat grass this help her give it a try it might help your cat
did you hear about the pet food recall on the news? its killing a lot of animals, it could be the foods they are eating.
go the the web site below, for a list of recalled pet foods

What color cat has the best temperament? i want a male .asking anyone w/lots of experience(breeders, groomers)

i heard that color affects temperament in cats. i would like to get a male kitten who will have a better chance of growing up to be affectionate, laid back and sweet . i will get an american shorthair at the pound..no purebreds for me. i would appreciate answers from those who have had lots of exposure to cats(breeders, groomers vets, ). one or two cat experiences per person will be less objective. i already have a color in mind because there seems to be agreement out there that this color cat is the friendliest. wondering if i will get the same response here.
Answers:
Well, I'm partial to male orange tabbies. They tend to be big sweet doofuses.

The office cat at the vet hospital where I work is a long-haired orange tabby who came to us off the streets five years ago. Roger has a basket on the receptionist's desk, and greets everyone who comes in. Somehow he knows which dogs to approach and which to stay away from, and he is amiable to all the cats that come in. I've seen him go up to the cages of frightened cats and make chuckling and chirping sounds that seem to help calm them, and when someone has to have a pet euthanized he will go and get up in the grieving owner's lap or sit with them.

So my vote is for orange tabby boys.
long haired cats are generally more laid back than short haired theres plenty of long haired ones at the pound tho! white cats sometimes are born deaf so if you chose this color make sure you know it isnt or if it is your willing to take on this kind of thing. calico cats are always girls so that ones out if you want a male. black cats seem to be more subdued than other colors maybe that just the ones ive seen though. i have a persian rag doll mix that i got from a free kitten box outside of a pet store when i had just planned of getting food lol! and shes been the sweetest most docile cat ive ever owned.
I have never heard that color has relation to the temperament of a cat...I have a black %26 white male DSH and he is extremely affectionate and playful. He will play with anything that moves, is very inquisitive, %26 loves to explore; but he also enjoys just sitting in your lap while you watch TV or sleeping on your back while you take a nap. He just likes being with people. He gets along quite well with the family's Golden Retriever. He's the coolest cat I've ever met.
From experience I would say that color doesn't affect personality to a large degree. Some people believe in the breed stereotypes but they aren't completely true. Of course some follow the rules. You just have to meet a lot of different cats until you find the right one. You'll know as soon has you pick him up if he belongs with you.
,,,Iwouldnt get a black cat if i were you,of all tthe black cats that ive known they had demonic tendancies,if I went to pet one it immidiatly went sraight for my face and another one would hiss and try desperatly to attack me..
It doesn't actually make a difference what colour the cat is, the temperament will be the same. I've had lots of cats in my short lifetime and I've dealt with a lot of cats in the practice where I work and I've never notcied any connection between colours and temperaments.

If you're looking for a cat with an affectionate, laid back and sweet temperament, then I would definitely go for a female cat instead. Males tend to be more agressive, even after neutering, whereas females tend to be more docile. If you're worried about having to take care of kittens, you could always get the cat spayed(female neuter). It might not be as simple as castration(male neuter), but it's still a very straightforward operation done by vets at least once a day. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few female cats in the pound that are already neutered.

Best of luck in your cat hunt.
I have never heard of color affecting the personality of a cat. Growing up I had a long haired black cat that was pretty stand offish around most people, and only liked to attention when he wanted it. Now I have a short haired black cat who is extremely affectionate and has a great temperament. I also have a calico who is stubborn and has a bad temper lol.
any coloured cat has a good temperament, if said cat is inclined in the moment to have a good temperament. all cats are marvelous creatures.
I wish you could tell me where you heard that from. I have had cats for 35 yrs of my life. I have now a pitch black female rescue and she's very affectionate and guards from all violence in the house. For instance, when my 2 large dogs wrestle and it goes too far, she comes running in and starts swinging them paws and breaks it up, or if someones at the door she's the first one to greet and won't back down. My other is a long hair himalayan--I have to admit the most dumbest, talkative, very-very lazy, super cuddly cat i've ever owned and wouldn't get rid of her if i was homeless. She will bathe you from head to toe if you let her. Females are my favorite-just make sure you please have it fixed. All the males i've had are more active, get bored and tend to spray in certain areas around the house. Not all my males did but more so than not. Males are roamers at heart, thats what they do, roam, stalk and prey from a string on the floor to the mouse outside or another cat. If a male smells a female in heat (from more than a mile away), it will drive him crazy! Females to me are the best way to go.
The color of the cat does not effect its temperment however males do tend to be a little more laid back. The truth is that a cat will really take on the personallity of its owner. I know that sounds weird but it is true. My family has two cats that were litter mates and both males, affectionate, and laid back but they have differences to that don't have anything to do with color. My cat is and has some of my personality; loveable and friendly around people he knows and shy around people he doesn't. My mothers cat is a little different he like my mother is constantly outgoing and slightly obsessive compulsive. The family that I cat sit for the cat is so much like the wife very uptight and anxious. Get the color cat you want but when it comes to temperment of the cat treat it affectionatly and lovingly and will be the same way.
Siamese cats are great. They have a personality all their own. Siamese cats that are raised with love and affection will be your best friend. They get very attached to one person and can be possessive. They are so much fun as they are typically very playful and affectionate. I have had several Siamese during my life and each one was great. My last one died a few months ago of a bowel rupture (she was 14 when she died). There are several breeds of Siamese. And yes, you can find them in shelters or animal rescue groups. My current cat is a lilac point Himalayan that I got from a county shelter. I've had her since 1998 and she's 15 now.
